Reports of assaults on immigrants up in Yuma area

    Associated Press
    Sept. 18, 2006 03:07 PM

YUMA - Reports of assaults on illegal immigrants in some areas along the Arizona-Mexico border have increased more than tenfold from 2005 to 2006, according to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Illegal immigrants reported 18 assaults to the Border Patrol in 2005 versus about 200 so far this year, said Chris Van Wagenen, a Border Patrol spokesman in the Yuma sector, which covers the southwestern corner of Arizona.

He said the assaults include physical assaults, robberies and rapes.

Van Wagenen said the numbers refer only to acts of violence occurring on the Mexican side of the border and include only assaults reported by illegal immigrants to Border Patrol agents.

The culprits are usually the smugglers, or "coyotes," who are bringing the people across, and criminals tagging along with groups making their way to the border or waiting in ambush at the border or along the way, he said.
