REVOLT AMONG REPUBLICANS ON IMMIGRATION BILL: 70 HOUSE MEMBERS RISK CAREERS IN PLANNED SHOWDOWN WITH LEADERSHIP

    Jun. 13, 2013 9:29am Madeleine Morgenstern

Seventy House Republicans are planning a politically risky showdown with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) to try to force additional debate on an immigration bill they say will mean amnesty for illegal immigrants and have dire consequences for the country.

The 70 members are petitioning for a special Republican conference meeting on the bill, a “highly unusual” move to go head-to-head with the speaker, according to Reps. Michele Bachmann (Minn.), Steve King (Iowa) and Louie Gohmert (Texas), who are serving as spokespersons for the group.

Bachmann, King and Gohmert told TheBlaze the group is invoking the Hastert Rule: requiring support from a majority of the majority to bring a bill forward.

The petition is expected to go to the House leadership on Friday, but it’s possible some signatories might remove their names due to political risk, or that Boehner could head off the challenge by striking a deal. Going against leadership in such a way could have harsh political consequences for the signatories, including retaliation such as permanently getting passed over for chairmanship positions.

A Boehner spokesman did not immediately return a request for comment.

Boehner is on a tight schedule for getting immigration reform passed in the House, predicting this week that Congress could finalize a bill for President Barack Obama’s signature by the end of the year. Any major challenge could ignite pushback from the American public that could force lawmakers to scrap the bill, as happened in the 2007 immigration effort.

The three representatives told TheBlaze that more than half of the Republicans in the House were elected after 2007, and have no concept of how strongly the public opposed the bill.

In an interview with World Net Daily this week, Bachmann predicted that if the immigration bill becomes law, “the whole political system will change.”

“This is President Obama’s number one political agenda item because he knows we will never again have a Republican president, ever, if amnesty goes into effect. We will perpetually have a progressive, liberal president, probably a Democrat, and we will probably see the House of Representatives go into Democrat hands and the Senate will stay in Democrat hands,” Bachmann said.

She also said that if it passes, the bill will create a permanent progressive class.

“That’s what’s at risk right now. It may sound melodramatic, I don’t mean it that way, but this is that big and that important,” Bachmann said.

Boehner is working with the white house and Pelosi to ram this immigration bill through, please folks let Boehner know how you feel. Rather then focus on jobs and problems they intend to saddle the American Taxpayer with millions more welfare people.

i did call Congressman Boehner's office to express my opposition to him and to his amnesty efforts.

Yep. And to make Boehner's caving in even more incomprehensible, he's signing a death warrant for his own party. All amnesty will accomplish is to increase the number of people who automatically vote Democrat.

Boehner could choose to make the case for the Grand Old Party focusing on jobs for Americans. This might actually cause Joe Lunchbucket to re-evaluate his automatic vote for Democrats. Instead, Boehner ignores unemployed and underemployed Americans and focuses on enfranchising people who will never vote Republican. Amazng.

Seventy members plan risky revolt to stop immigration

June 13, 2013 by Michael Dorstewitz

Three conservative Republican representatives are speaking on behalf of a group totaling 70 that are petitioning Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, to invoke a rule that would restrict the immigration reform bill from ever seeing the light of day on the House floor.

Reps. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, Steve King from Iowa and Louie Gohmert of Texas who are serving as spokespersons for the group, seek to put into the play the Hastert Rule, which would require a nod from a majority of the majority party to bring a bill forward, according to The Blaze.

The revolt of the 70 came about at the urging of the The Conservative Action Project, a group chaired by former Attorney General Edward Meese III and “designed to facilitate conservative leaders working together.” The group sent a letter to GOP House members urging the the rule be codified in light of legislation that had passed ins spite of the disapproval of a majority of Republican votes, reported The Daily Caller.

“Recently House Republicans have passed bills that are inconsistent with its mandate from the American people. … The fiscal cliff tax increases, increased pork spending buried into the Hurricane Sandy relief bill, and the Violence Against Women Act reauthorization all passed the House over the opposition of a majority of House Republicans,” the letter said.

The group went on to note that invoking the rule would “help to restore and foster unity in the GOP conference” and “restore confidence among Americans.”

So far, Speaker Boehner has said little, other than to vow that “any legislation would follow ‘regular order,’ meaning any bill will go through committees,” according to a Wednesday CNN report.

The group of 70 petitioning to go head-to-head with the Speaker was described as a “highly unusual” move by Rep. Bachmann.

The 70 House members don’t represent anything close to even a majority of the Democrats, and some of those 70 may waver due to political considerations. The House is made up of 234 Republicans and 201 Democrats.

Seventy should still be enough to give Boehner pause, especially given the fact that he has violated the Hastert Rule on a number of important bills. Things are expected to come to a head Friday. Stay tuned.

Why isn't their a Vote of No Confidence rule or if there is why hasn't it been invoked. Should simply oust Boehner as Speaker and replace him as it seems to often he's on the Dem side trying to push Reps into giving in.

Plus why can't their be a way to remove a politician from the Rep/GOP side with a vote of the majority of that party in the house/senate. Get rid of the RINO's and oust them from the party.
