Texas Governor Greg Abbott says Texas will not allow Syrian refugees to be relocated into Texas in the wake of the Paris terrorist attack. He also called upon President Barack Obama to halt the importation of any additional Syrian refugees into the U.S.

“Given the tragic attacks in Paris and the threats we have already seen, Texas cannot participate in any program that will result in Syrian refugees – any one of whom could be connected to terrorism – being resettled in Texas,” Governor Abbott said a letter to President Obama. “Effective today, I am directing the Texas Health & Human Services Commission’s Refugee Resettlement Program to not participate in the resettlement of any Syrian refugees in the State of Texas. And I urge you, as President, to halt your plans to allow Syrians to be resettled anywhere in the United States.”

The Texas governor joins other state’s governors in taking action to stop the importation of potential terrorists. At least one of the Paris terrorists was a Syrian refugee who had recently entered Europe.

Michigan’s governor Rick Snyder said on Sunday that his state would postpone any efforts to accept Syrian refugees, according to a Breitbart News report. “There will be difficult days ahead for the people of France and they remain in our thoughts and prayers,” the Michigan governor stated. “It’s also important to remember that these attacks are the efforts of extremists and do not reflect the peaceful ways of people of Middle Eastern descent here and around the world.”

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley also said his state will not participate in accepting any Syrian refugees at this time. Fox News reported the governor saying, “[a]fter full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris … I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way.”

Emphasizing the potential danger to Texans and other Americans, Governor Abbott said, “Neither you nor any federal official can guarantee that Syrian refugees will not be part of any terroristic activity. As such, opening our door to them irresponsibly exposes our fellow Americans to unacceptable peril.”

Abbott: No Syrian refugees in Texas

Texas will not accept any Syrian refugees fleeing their civil war-torn country, Gov. Greg Abbott said Monday, specifically citing the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris last week and a separate shooting

    in Texas earlier this year.

He has ordered the state's Health and Human Services Commission's Refugee Resettlement Program not to participate in any resettlement program for Syrian refugees, and pressed President

Barack Obama to stop his plan to take in 10,000 refugees over the next year.

"Neither you nor any federal official can guarantee that Syrian refugees will not be part of any terroristic activity," Abbott wrote in a letter to Obama.

"As such, opening our door to them irresponsibly exposes our fellow Americans to unacceptable peril."

Abbott said the federal government does not have adequate background information that is necessary to effectively conduct proper security checks on Syrian nationals.

He cited May's terrorist attack on a Garland event that hosted an art contest to draw the Prophet Mohammad, which ISIS took credit for.

"Given the tragic attacks in Paris and the threats we have already seen, Texas cannot participate in any program that will result in Syrian refugees - any one of whom could be connected to t

errorism - being resettled in Texas," Abbott said.

Denise Gilman, director of the immigration clinic at The University of Texas' School of Law, said Abbott's decision to halt state funding for the effort is about all he can do.

"It sounds like what he's going to do is make the political point, but really all he can concretely say he's going to do is disallow state level funding for resettlement of this particular community,"
    Gilman said.

"I'm not sure if that'd be enough to prevent settlement of Syrians in Texas because there might be other funding sources that are anxious to have them settle here."
