Authorities: Teen's death cartel related

A state prosecutor says the shooting death of Francisco Araujo is cartel related and two Brownsville teens have been charged with his murder.

Roberto Ortega,17, and Eric Hernandez, 17, were arraigned this morning on one count each of murder.

The duo appeared before Municipal Judge Ben Neece, who set a $1 million bond against each.

Araujo's body was discovered Sunday in a wooded area behind Los Cedros Apartments. His family reported him missing Wednesday.

Ortega and Hernandez reportedly gave police statements implicating themselves in the murder, authorities said.

"Mr. Ortega implicated himself as the shoot and Mr. Hernandez implicated himself as knowing Mr. Ortega was going to kill the victim," Gabe Garcia, an assistant district attorney with the Cameron County office said at the arraignment.

"Due to the seriousness of this offense and that in the statements it says it is a cartel related murder, the State is asking for a million dollar bond," the DA said.
