STAFF REPORT

A Pharr man faces human smuggling charges after officers said he attempted to smuggle a child into the country illegally Monday at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge.

The 31-year-old man, whose name was not released, had claimed he was the parent of an infant girl and two boys, ages 4 and 5, according to a U.S. Customs and Border Protection news release.

Officers learned one of the boys is a Honduran national without immigration status in the U.S., the release said.

Officers took the man into custody, where he remains ahead of a hearing before a U.S. magistrate judge.

The man’s other two children were released to relatives. The Honduran boy was transferred to an immigration facility for temporary housing, the release said.
