SUMAS, Wash. — Mar 19, 2015, 9:50 PM ET
The Whatcom County, Washington, sheriff says a U.S. Border Patrol agent has fatally shot a man near Sumas, Washington, along the border with British Columbia.
The Bellingham Herald reports ( http://is.gd/Bk0UaG ) the man was shot in the head Thursday afternoon in an apparent confrontation with law enforcement.
The newspaper says that shortly before the fatal shooting, a Sumas police officer reported shots had been fired and asked for backup.
A Border Patrol agent also was at the scene. Sheriff Bill Elfo says the agent shot the unidentified man who died.
The road where the shooting took place is less than 1,000 feet from the U.S.-Canada border. Police, the FBI, border authorities and the sheriff's office responded.
Elfo says a multiagency team will investigate the shooting. A Border Patrol spokesman said the agency was working on a statement.
The small border crossing at Sumas is about 100 miles north of Seattle.

A Canadian fugitive accused of killing his girlfriend and trying to illegally cross the border was shot dead by U.S. Border Patrol agent after the agent was assaulted while patrolling the U.S.-Canada border near Sumas, Washington.
CBS reports that the person killed on Thursday afternoon was a man named Daniel Paul, 42, of Vancouver who is accused of killing partner Rose Paul, 36, and who has been missing since March 1.
Even though the pair have the same last name it is not believed that they are related or married.
Paul, a mother of five children, was discovered dead in the basement of her Vancouver home on March 3.

Investigation: Local law enforcement investigate the Canada border near Sumas, Washington where an agent fatally shot 'a suspected illegal border crosser' after he was assaulted
When Vancouver police were hunting for Daniel Paul they described him as having several tattoos.
'On his left arm, he has tattoos of an eagle, a rat, a knife, a skull and a buffalo. On his right arm, he has tattoos of a skull with a rose and a heart,' said the description.
Following the murder, Rose Paul's family who is of Native American descent asked police to find Daniel Paul and asked for anyone with any information to call 911.
At a press conference on March 17 they described how they held a spiritual ceremony for Rose Paul in which they burned food, offering her one last meal so that her spirit could move forward.
During the spiritual ceremony reflecting their beliefs about the after life, they burned clothing for every season so that Rose Paul's spirit would have clothing for its journey after life.
Her sister Candace Paul said Rose was beautiful, outgoing, very loving and the mother of five girls, aged 8 to 19.
'She helped all the young girls with the struggles of life,' she said.
Rose's uncle Howard Paul said Daniel Paul 'is very dangerous.'
Vancouver police said that Daniel Paul has a history of committing crimes against women.

I see no concerns here. Two cases closed, one on both sides of the border.
