US plan for Mexican barrier sparks neighbours' anger
Who cares about what these people think?
THERE has been anger over US plans to stop illegal immigration by building a triple-layered fence across its southern borders.
Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Mexico have all criticised President George Bush's plan.
In a joint news conference in Mexico City, diplomats from the five nations said that building barriers is not the way to solve problems between neighbouring nations. "The position of Mexico and the other countries is that walls will not make a difference in terms of the solution to immigration ," said Mexican Foreign Secretary Luis Ernesto Derbez.
On Wednesday, the US Senate approved a proposal to build 370 miles of fencing along parts of the 2000-mile border separating the US and Mexico.
In the same session, the Senate agreed to give many illegal immigrants a shot at US citizenship.
