    Utah OKs Restricted Immigrant Licenses

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The Utah Senate voted Friday to take driver's licenses away from people who cannot prove they are legal U.S. residents and issue them a driving "privilege" card instead.

Lawmakers voted 18-8 to approve the measure, which goes next to the House. Gov. Jon Huntsman said Friday that he would support it.

Senators said they were alarmed by an investigation that found 58,000 undocumented workers had Utah driver's licenses and that some non-citizens were able to use the licenses to register to vote and cast ballots at the polls.

"It's scary, being taken advantage of," Republican state Sen. Gregory Bell said. "Once they get a Utah driver's license, it's a platform for everything else."

Republican Sen. Curtis Bramble said the bill would end Utah's status as a "gateway" for undocumented workers to obtain legitimate identification.

The driving "privilege" card could not be used to board a plane, register to vote or obtain any other official identification. It would have to be renewed annually and would have different fonts and colors than a regular driver's license.

It would also be stamped with the words, "FOR DRIVING PRIVILEGES ONLY - NOT VALID FOR IDENTIFICATION."

Hundreds of immigrants arrived at the Capitol to oppose the bill, filling the halls of one wing and spilling outside onto a plaza.

Tony Yapias, former director of Utah's Office of Hispanic Affairs, said the restricted cards amounted to second-class driving privileges. He said they would encourage racial profiling and allow police to corral undocumented people for deportation.

    This is what gets me:

Just moving the deck chairs on the Titanic and thinking this will appease everyone.

Wish the Supreme Court would smash this as a state intrusion on federal immigration policy and on dormant interstate commerce clause grounds. But its hard to believe any means will actually be used to stop it. The people of the US are scrooed and nothing will stop it short of civil war.
