Va. police chief questions immigration policy, DC

WASHINGTON
WASHINGTON (AP) A Virginia police chief is calling on federal government officials to stop giving employment authorization cards to illegal immigrants with pending deportation proceedings after the recent death of a nun.
Prince William County police chief Charlie Deane mentioned the August death of a nun who was allegedly killed by a drunken driver who is not legally in the country in the letter to Homeland Security officials released Friday.
Police say 23-year-old Carlos Martinelly Montano, who is from Bolivia, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a previous arrest, but he was released pending a deportation hearing.
Deane says Montano received an employment authorization card after his second DUI offense and that Montano used the card to obtain a Virginia driver's license.

Carlos A. Martinelly Montano faces several new charges, including one count of felony murder, in the crash that killed a Benedictine sister and wounded two other Richmond-based nuns.
Prince William County Commonwealth's Attorney Paul B. Ebert said Tuesday night that a grand jury indicted Montano, 23, on one count each of felony murder and driving with a revoked license and with two counts of malicious wounding while intoxicated.
Martinelly Montano, whom federal officials have described as an illegal immigrant, could be arraigned Wednesday in Prince William Circuit Court, Ebert said.
"These are very serious," Ebert said of the charges. "That's all I can say."
The crash on Aug. 1 killed Sister Denise Mosier and seriously injured Sister Charlotte Lange and Sister Connie Ruth Lupton. The wreck occurred less than four miles from the nuns' spiritual home at the Benedictine Sisters of Virginia monastery near Manassas.
The nuns' car was struck head-on by a vehicle driven by Martinelly Montano, a native of Bolivia.
Martinelly Montano still is charged with third-offense driving under the influence and with involuntary manslaughter, but Ebert said he plans to withdraw those charges in favor of the newer and more serious ones.

It's hard to believe what's being said here. Our own government is rewarding these people for breaking our law. Does anyone have any doubt this guy would have been given amnesty if he stuck around long enough before killing someone. Seems like this is what our government is trying to do. Delay deportation long enough in the hopes some legislation is passed to grant legal status.Police say 23-year-old Carlos Martinelly Montano, who is from Bolivia, was turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement after a previous arrest, but he was released pending a deportation hearing.

How can you issed an employment authorization card to someone who been arrested for being here illegally? This should be criminal!Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
