WI: State legislator proposes Arizona-style immigration bill

State legislator proposes Arizona-style immigration bill

    Associated Press
    Tuesday, May 24, 2011
    MADISON, WI

A state Republican legislator has introduced a bill that would mirror some of the tough enforcement measures of Arizona's controversial immigration bill.

The legislation introduced by Rep. Don Pridemore of Hartford will force local law enforcement to ask those stopped for civil or criminal violations for proof of citizenship or legal immigration status.

Those who fail to provide proper identification will be handed over to a U.S. immigration or border patrol agency.

Pridemore planned to introduce the bill earlier but said he wanted to revise the bill to make sure it did not promote any racial profiling.

Opponents argue the bill might do that regardless of the new language.

The bill also fines cities, municipalities and counties $500 a day if they refuse to comply with the law.

Doubt very much this would pass in Wisconsin. The state gives in-state tuition to illegals, bunch of bleeding heart liberals. I'm not sure if they still do it, but at one time the City of Green Bay started finger printing everyone stopped for a traffic violation. Then the Hispanics started screaming about racial profiling - of course we all know that only Hispanics are stopped for speeding. Although a very long shot, I hope this passes since we hope to move to Wisconsin fairly soon.

    Wisconsin lawamker proposes Immigration Bill

    By Charles Benson

A controversial new Immigration bill is making its way into the state Legislature. Some claim it will help problems in our state. Others suggest this is simply racial profiling.

The proposed law is being compared to Arizona's controversial Immigration law and if it passes it would have a huge impact on Milwaukee.

The proposed law puts the burden on law enforcement across the state to crack down on illegal or undocumented people living in the state. Hartford Republican Don Pridemore is pushing the bill.

"We want to go on record as being a state that is concerned about immigration problems," said Pridemore.

Under the proposed bill if you are suspected of a crime and cannot prove your identity within 48 hours law enforcement will be required to turn you over to Immigration officials.

There are an estimated 100,000 undocumented people in Wisconsin. Voces de la Frontera in Milwaukee believes the bill is unconstitutional and unnecessary.

"We think its going to legalize racial profiling," said Jeanne Geraci with Voces. "It's going to hurt public safety and community policing."

The organization believes Pridemore's bill is not a solution to the immigration problem.

"What's not good for America is to have a patch work of state and local attempts at doing the federal government's job.

Pridemore says the bill specifically addresses racial profiling concerns.

"I've gone through a number of iterations on the bill to try to prevent racial discrimination at any possible level.

Republican leaders say there are no plans to take up the bill in the immediate future. Right now they are focused on passing the budget.

New bill aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration

    May 25, 2011 12:29 PM EDT

MADISON (WKOW) -- Representative Donald Pridemore (R-Hartford) is introducing a bill aimed at cracking down on illegal immigration.

Under the proposal, law enforcers would have to ask you for proof of citizenship when they pull you over. If you can't provide that, you'll be arrested.

You'll then have 48 hours to prove your legal status, or officers will turn you over to federal immigration authorities.

Rep. Pridemore says under the bill, showing your driver's license during a traffic stop is good enough.

"A driver's license is sufficient enough to prove who you are and that's all we're asking to prove in this case," said Pridemore.

"If it's passed, it will lead to racial profiling and it also is an unfunded mandate," said Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee).

The director of Centro Hispano in Madison says the bill will have a negative impact on minorities.

"With this bill, it will affect everyone because if someone sees a crime they will be less likely to call law enforcement," said Mario Garcia Sierra, Director of Centro Hispano.

Cities and counties refusing to comply would be fined $500 a day
