Workers taken in Asheville immigration raid on Shogun Buffet

ASHEVILLE — Twelve restaurant workers were detained in an immigration raid off Brevard Road Tuesday, according to a local immigrants rights group.

The raid occurred around 10 a.m. at the Shogun Buffet, said Ada Volkmer with Defensa Comunitaria.

Volker said agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained eight people from Latin American countries and four Asian immigrants ranging in age from 23 to around 40. Volkmer said some of the immigrants were from Mexico and El Salvador.

An ICE spokesman did not immediately return a message. A cashier at the restaurant at 1000 Brevard Road said the managers were not in and that he could not give a number for the owner.

Volkmer criticized the raid, which she said had separated at least six of the immigrants from family, including children they have here.

ASHEVILLE — Twelve Buncombe County restaurant workers were detained in one of the largest immigration raids in the mountains, according to a local immigrants rights group.

Agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement went into the Shogun Buffet Hibachi Grill & Sushi restaurant at 1000 Brevard Road Tuesday, said Ada Volkmer with Defensa Comunitaria.

“ICE went in around 10 a.m. before the restaurant opened and arrested the employees,â€

ASHEVILLE — Most of the Buncombe County restaurant workers swept up in one of the mountains’ biggest immigration raids will have a chance to post bond, immigrants rights advocates said Thursday.
