Nearly nine out of 10 illegal immigrants, or 87 percent, would apply for U.S. citizenship if the law changed to allow it, according to a poll released Monday.

The poll of 400 Latino undocumented adults conducted by Latino Decisions, also found that 85 percent of respondents have a family member who is a U.S. citizen, while three quarters of those questioned have children living in the United States. Another 62 percent have at least one child born in America.

“In the midst of the debate over the future of immigration policy in the United States, the time was right to assess the social and familial ties between undocumented immigrants and American citizens. The poll finds a very strong connection between immigrant communities and other Americans,” the poll concluded.

The survey, conducted March 4-29, also showed that more than two-thirds of respondents have been living in the United States for more than a decade. When asked why they came to America, 77 percent said they came for better economic opportunities or to create a better life for their family.
