Jones' critics have drained out the gnat and swallowed the camel
April 06, 2011
Terry Jones, His Critics, and Islam
By Jack Kerwick
46 Comments
Terry Jones has finally done it.
It may be recalled that Terry Jones is the Florida pastor who just last year threatened to stage a Quran burning in response to the decision to construct an Islamic center not far from where the twin towers once stood in downtown Manhattan. It may have taken him a while longer than he originally planned, but Jones' pledge has finally come to fruition.
This would have been uneventful had it not served as the latest excuse for massive rioting and killing on the part of Muslims worldwide. Particularly remarkable, however, is that much of this destruction is occurring in just that place -- Afghanistan -- where we have spent the last decade laboring tirelessly to satiate that longing for "freedom" that President Bush insisted makes its dwelling in every human heart. Furthermore, it is President Karzai who first called the riotous murderers' attention to it. Had Karzai refrained from rendering an international issue of this obscure pastor's act, over 100 of his fellow countrymen would not have been made to part with life and limb since just this past Friday.
Not unexpectedly, it was with lightning speed that both President Obama and General Petraeus condemned Jones' act. Whether Jones is deserving of this condemnation is a question with which we needn't occupy ourselves, for ultimately, it is a red herring. You see, Jones may very well have a speck in his own eye, but through this one engagement of his, he succeeded in exposing the boulder in the collective eye of his critics.
Jones purchased a book with his own resources and then burned it on his own property. This choice of his, we are told, warrants swift, decisive condemnation, for in addition to being "bigoted" and "intolerant," it lead to violence in the Islamic world and, as such, threatens to impede our efforts there.
Now, if Jones' right-leaning detractors are consistent in their reasoning, they will recognize that in condemning Jones for the reasons that they specify, they have drained out the gnat and swallowed the camel. More to the point, they will see that to a far greater degree than Jones, it is they who deserve condemnation.
First, Jones acted on his own time and on his own dime. In stark contrast, our elected representatives of both parties rely upon the resources of others -- namely, citizens -- to wage wars in Islamic lands, wars to which millions of those citizens are opposed.
Second, the monumental abuse to which they have been subjected has reduced the terms "bigotry" and "intolerance" to nothing more than vapid rhetorical devices. Yet presumably, Pastor Jones' Quran burning is bigoted and intolerant because large numbers of Muslims both take offense at it and express their indignation through violence. If so, then inasmuch as large numbers of Muslims are both offended by America's invasions of Islamic lands and express their outrage through violence, such invasions are that much more bigoted and intolerant.
Third, if Jones is to blame for the fact that his act provoked violence in the Islamic world, then insofar as America's actions-its wars-have been stimulating violence there for years, the American government which initiated them and the citizenry that endorsed them are even more blameworthy.
Interestingly, when Ron Paul and others alluded to "the blowback" effects of our engagements in the Middle East, their brethren on the right -- including and especially Republican Party presidential contenders in 2008 -- ridiculed them and accused them of exempting Muslims from all responsibility for 9/11 and elsewhere. That the charge was bogus is neither here nor there. Why, we must ask, are not these same people similarly appalled when a lone, little known pastor from Florida is being implicated in the life negating rampages of Muslims a world away?
Fourth, if Jones is guilty of jeopardizing our troops in Afghanistan by burning a Quran and enraging Muslims, then President Bush, President Obama, and every other American who supports the deployment of soldiers to this country for nation-building purposes are exponentially guiltier of the same.
For all I know, Terry Jones may be an enthusiastic supporter of our "Democracy Project" in the Middle East. He may not care about what his critics say about him; he may not even be aware of all that they say. Still, in the absence of a single utterance, Jones managed to cast a spotlight on current American foreign policy -- the Islamic violence with which it will contend in perpetuity and which it has actually exacerbated -- while simultaneously turning his objectors' criticisms against themselves.
There is, though, one thing that Jones aspired to establish. He wanted to prove to the world that Islam is a counterfeit or godless religion. In this regard, we must conclude that he was wildly successful, for massive, murderous violence of the sort that Muslims have unleashed against innocents over the last couple of days in Afghanistan and elsewhere in response to his book burning is as sharp an indictment against Islam as any that anyone could have made against it.
But perhaps it is now I who lack consistency. If Jones bears no blame for the most recent killing spree upon which Muslims embarked, then neither should he be credited for putting the lie to the by now familiar fiction that Islam is an otherwise peaceful religion that has been "hijacked" by a relatively small handful of "extremists."
The murderous Muslims themselves deserve all responsibility for this.

Ann Barnhardt Fights Totalitarian Islam and Its Useful Idiots
By Andrew G. Bostom

Many, Many links on this post
Once again a mere flicker -- in this case burning a copy of the Koran in Florida -- has ignited the inferno of deeply seated infidel-hatred that pervades the contemporary Muslim world, precipitating violence, death, and general mayhem amongst our Afghan " allies."
This eruption was hardly pastor Terry Jones' fault. The insane orgy of murderous Muslim violence in Afghanistan was a direct result of Islamic doctrine. Jones' simple non-violent act effectively administered a diagnostic societal stress test revealing -- yet again -- the pathological mindset engendered by an Islam that remains ossified in its Medieval fortress, defiantly unreformed and unrepentant.
Kansas-born Ann Barnhardt was raised on a farm with a working cow-calf operation. Her formal training includes a B.S. in Animal Husbandry and Agricultural Economics, obtained at Kansas State University. Now a Colorado-based commodity broker, she reacted with singular clarity and courage to the recent carnage by the all too familiar Afghan Muslim mobs, and of equal importance, their witless, morally cretinous American apologists. Her verbal dismembering of Lindsey Graham (in Part 1) is epochal.
Diana West introduced me to Ann's highly informed, if appropriately trenchant videos (in two parts), which can be viewed in full at these links [(Part 1); (Part 2)] Diana's commentary and a subsequent equally insightful blog by Roger Kimball provide valuable context to Ann Barnhardt's videos seen through the prism of two of our most perspicacious cultural critics.
My focus is on Barnhardt's astute, irrefragable observation (starting at 1:54) that Islam is a "...totalitarian political system masquerading as a religion," and her accurate "exegesis" of Koranic verses, entirely consistent with their interpretation by a classical mainstream Koranic commentary that remains the seminal work introducing Muslims to "Koranic understanding."
First, Ann Barnhardt's view of Islam as an innately totalitarian political system comports with a continuum of modern assessments by great Western scholars dating back to the renowned Swiss historian Jacob Burkhardt in the mid-19th century. Bernard Lewis, the eminence grise of contemporary Western scholars of Islam, confirmed Burckhardt's assessment a century later.
Perhaps the initial reference to Islam as a totalitarian system, specifically (Burckhardt used the most comparable 19th century term "despotism"), was made in 1937 by Charles R. Watson, the Cairo-born first head of the American University at Cairo. Watson noted,
In the case of the Mohammedan world, religion has seemingly affected every detail of life with its prescriptions and requirements...[N]o other religion, as it conquered new territory, has so completely and quickly wiped out even the culture of the conquered people and imposed upon their total life new ways and customs, often a new language, as has the Mohammedan religion.
Islam can truly be described as totalitarian. By a million roots, penetrating every phase of life, all of them with religious significance, it is able to maintain its hold upon the life of the Moslem peoples.
Subsequently, in 1950, G.H. Bousquet, one of the pre-eminent 20th century scholars of the Shari'a (Islamic Law), described Islam as "as a doubly totalitarian system," which, via the timeless institution of jihad war,
...claimed to impose itself on the whole world and it claimed also, by the divinely appointed Muhammadan law...to regulate down to the smallest details the whole life of the Islamic community and of every individual believer.
Lastly, Bernard Lewis in his 1954 essay, "Communism and Islam" expounded upon the quintessence of totalitarian Islam, and how it was antithetical in nature to Western democracy, while sharing important features of Communist totalitarianism -- in particular, global domination via jihad.
Quite obviously, the Ulama [religious leaders] of Islam are very different from the Communist Party. Nevertheless, on closer examination, we find certain uncomfortable resemblances. Both groups profess a totalitarian doctrine, with complete and final answers to all questions on heaven and earth; the answers are different in every respect, alike only in their finality and completeness, and in the contrast they offer with the eternal questioning of Western man. Both groups offer to their members and followers the agreeable sensation of belonging to a community of believers, who are always right, as against an outer world of unbelievers, who are always wrong. Both offer an exhilarating feeling of mission, of purpose, of being engaged in a collective adventure to accelerate the historically inevitable victory of the true faith over the infidel evil-doers. The traditional Islamic division of the world into the House of Islam and the House of War, two necessarily opposed groups, of which- the first has the collective obligation of perpetual struggle against the second, also has obvious parallels in the Communist view of world affairs. There again, the content of belief is utterly different, but the aggressive fanaticism of the believer is the same. The humorist who summed up the Communist creed as "There is no God and Karl Marx is his Prophet'" was laying his finger on a real affinity. The call to a Communist Jihad, a Holy War for the faith-a new faith, but against the self-same Western Christian enemy-might well strike a responsive note.Last edited by AirborneSapper7; 01-08-2012 at 06:18 AM.
