    Drug dog sniffs out 5-ton pot haul at border

    1,080 tightly wrapped bundles of marijuana were found hidden behind a false wall inside the trailer. - SAN DIEGO — In the end, the trucker just wasn't FAST enough.

    As a result, someone on this side of the U.S.-Mexico border won't be getting a five-ton shipment of marijuana worth an estimated $6.5 million.

    A commercial truck driver from Mexico tried to get his tractor-trailer through the cargo inspection station Wednesday afternoon at Otay Mesa, said Angelica de Cima, a spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

    The 37-year-old Tijuana man was registered in the Free Secure Trade (FAST) program, which allows known low-risk commercial cargoes from Mexico and Canada to be expedited through border inspection.

    While the unidentified driver was registered with FAST, his truck was not. He was sent to secondary inspection, where the big rig got the once-over from a Customs and Border Protection drug dog.

    The trucker's cargo manifest said “toilet paper.â€

    I would like to know exactly what criteria is used to designate a driver as 'known low-risk.'
