Could a controversial new Illinois law become a model for other states that want to make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to buy and sell firearms?

Gov. Pat Quinn (D-IL) has signed a bill requiring ALL gun owners, including private citizens, to conduct a background check on ALL potential buyers, according to Fox News.

In addition, potential gun buyers are now required to present a firearm owners identification card( FOID). These cardswill be issued by the Illinois State Police, but only to applicants who pass a state criminal and mental health background check.
Before the gun purchase is finalized, the potential seller must also verify that the buyer’s FOID is valid.

And if your firearm is lost or stolen, that will need to be reported to the police within 72 hours.

The previous law only required a background check if one was purchasing a gun from a licensed firearm shop or a gun show in the state.
