Former Supreme Court Justice Wants to Change the Second Amendment for Our “safety and wellbeing”
Posted by The Daily Sheeple on Feb 23, 2014

In his new book, Six Amendments: How and Why We Should Change the Constitution, former (thankfully) Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens outlines the six Constitutional Amendments that he would like to see changed.

According to the book’s description on his website, Stevens outlines “six specific ways in which the Constitution should be amended in order to protect our democracy and the safety and wellbeing of American citizens.”

Given his liberal background (a 2003 statistical analysis of Supreme Court voting patterns found Stevens to be the most liberal member of the Court) it’s probably no surprise that one of the things that Stevens would change to increase our “safety and wellbeing” is the Second Amendment.
As it stands, most of us cherish these words:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
Stevens, however, believes that it is implied that these arms should only be kept by members of the militia and would like to see the Second Amendment changed in a way that would seriously limit our constitutional right to keep our firearms.
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms when serving in the militia shall not be infringed.
If this were to come to pass, I can foresee a whole lot of militias forming across the country.

An obviously biased piece of rhetoric was published on Bloomberg BusinessWeek (it’s important to note that this is the website owned by Bloomberg LP, which was founded by the infamous former Nanny Mayor Mike Bloomberg of New York City, a vocal opponent of gun rights). In the article, Stevens is lauded as “brilliant” and “an intellectual force to be reckoned with.”
Since Stevens believes that the authors of the Second Amendment were primarily concerned about the threat that a national standing army posed to the sovereignty of the states—as opposed to homeowners’ anxiety about violent felons—he thinks the best way to fix the situation is to amend the Second Amendment…

To support the change, he argues: “Emotional claims that the right to possess deadly weapons is so important that it is protected by the federal Constitution distort intelligent debate about the wisdom of particular aspects of proposed legislation designed to minimize the slaughter caused by the prevalence of guns in private hands.” (source)
The author of the article then continues to paint a picture of gun owners being members of some sort of fringe of society. “For a significant minority of Americans, firearms represent individualism, independence, and self-reliance.”

While personally, I would consider a tome that suggests changing our founding principals to be more of a horror story, The Hachette Book Group, which published the book, says:
Written with the same precision and elegance that made Stevens’s own Court opinions legendary for their clarity as well as logic, SIX AMENDMENTS is a remarkable work, both because of its unprecedented nature and, in an age of partisan ferocity, its inarguable common sense. (source)
Stevens was the longest serving member of the Supreme Court, serving from 1975-2010. He is 93.

Gun owners, libertarians, and conservatives across the country must have heaved a deep sigh of relief when Stevens stepped down from his seat on the Supreme Court. We can all be thankful that his book is only his own rhetoric, to be read by nodding pseudointellectual liberals and then discussed at hipster dinner parties, and that he no longer has the ability to personally reshape the laws of this land.

Congressmen Want Answers About ATF Raid On San Diego Gun Store

    March 23, 2014

Binaryloop | I've lived all over the US and found that most Americans love liberty but, get fooled into partisan politics. My goal is to wake people up and help them see it's not about left or right -- it's about freedom!

Two San Diego congressmen want to know why federal agents raided an Oceanside gun parts store last weekend and what the government plans to do with the computers and customer lists it confiscated.
Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Alpine) sent a letter to the director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Friday asking for information about the raid on Ares Armor last Saturday. The store owner had been granted an injunction by a judge to prevent the raid, but BATFE agents served a search warrant on the business anyway.
Read Duncan Hunter’s letter to the BATFE (PDF)
In a letter to BATFE Director Todd Jones, Issa asked

    • why customer information unrelated to the investigation was collected,
    • what BATFE intends to do with the data,
    • how BATFE will insure that the customer data remains confidential.

Idaho Governor Signs Emergency Legislation Nullifying All Future Federal Gun Laws

    March 24, 2014

State Sovereignty | I firmly believe in the Tenth Amendment and I want all citizens to understand the concept that “nullification…is the rightful remedy” when the federal government reaches beyond its constitutional powers.

BOISE, March 21, 2014 – On Thursday, Idaho Governor Butch Otter (R) signed a bill, which would effectively nullify future federal gun laws, by prohibiting state enforcement of any future federal act relating to personal firearms, a firearm accessories or ammunition.
S1332 passed the house by a vote of 68-0 and the senate by a vote of 34-0. Alaska and Kansas have also passed similar laws.
Erich Pratt, Director of Communications for Gun Owners of America, cheered the governor’s action. “By signing this nullification bill into law, Idaho has joined an elite class of states that are telling the feds to ‘get lost’ — especially when it comes to unconstitutional gun control infringements”

Introduced by the State Affairs Committee, the Idaho Federal Firearm, Magazine and Register Ban Enforcement Act, will:
“protect Idaho law enforcement officers from being directed, through federal executive orders, agency orders, statutes, laws, rules, or regulations enacted or promulgated on or after the effective date of this act, to violate their oath of office and Idaho citizens’ rights under Section 11, Article I, of the Constitution of the State of Idaho.”
