President Barack Obama’s job approval rating has slipped to a new low at just 58 percent, Gallup Poll Daily tracking reports, while 33 percent of Americans surveyed now disapprove of the job he is doing as president.

Obama’s disapproval rating is just one point shy of his record-high 34 percent disapproval score from early June, Gallup reports. His approval rating is similar to the 59 percent he has received on four other occasions.

The dip is a new low for Obama’s presidency. Since taking office in January, his approval rating has averaged 63 percent.

The decline in Obama’s ratings results from a drop in approval among Republicans, as well as among political independents, the poll shows. Democrats, however, remain as highly supportive of the president as ever at 92 percent.

Only 21 percent of Republicans now approve of the job Obama is doing, down from 30 percent last February. The approval rating of independents is down from 60 percent to 53 percent.

Several issues may be contributing factors behind Obama’s recent approval rating decline:

Public concerns about the cost of the president’s healthcare reform bill;

The administration’s out-of-control deficit spending;

And Obama’s cautious response to the election protests in Iran.
