Hollywood Body parts case: Victim may be former Mexicana Airlines worker
Body parts case: Victim may be former Mexicana Airlines worker
January 20, 2012 | 5:57pm
The man whose head, hands and feet were found this week in Bronson Canyon is a former Mexicana Airlines employee who had lived in the area for some time, according to sources.
Law enforcement identified him as Hervey Medellin. Records show he was 66 years old.
A friend told The Times that Medellin left the airline some time ago. The friend said she went to his apartment Friday after seeing it on television Thursday in connection with the case but could not find him. She spoke on the condition of anonymity, as did the law enforcement sources.
Medellin also once owned a Los Feliz condominium with another person, according to a resident who currently owns the property.
Los Angeles County coroner's officials declined to provide additional details about the victim because police have placed a security hold on the case, which prohibits them from releasing information.
It was not clear whether the man was first identified through a tip. Coroner's officials said Thursday that they were able to obtain fingerprints from one of the hands.
At least one person was questioned by detectives Thursday. And police were looking to talk to at least one other man, sources close to the investigation said.
On Thursday evening, police served a search warrant in an apartment complex on Delongpre Avenue in Hollywood, close to Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street. The address is associated with Medellin. They towed a silver Honda from the building about 7 p.m.
No arrests have been made.
Authorities have called off their search for additional body parts and reopened the Bronson Canyon area of Griffith Park on Friday morning. It had been closed since Tuesday afternoon when a dog discovered the severed head. A massive search by authorities yielded two hands and two feet.

Body parts case: Victim hiked near trails where severed head found

The man whose head, hands and feet were found this week along a hiking trail near the Hollywood sign used to hike in Griffith Park.
Authorities have identified the victim as Hervey Medellin, 66, a retired Mexicana Airlines employee.
Medellin lived with another person in a third-floor apartment on DeLongpre Avenue -- not far from the hiking trail where his body parts were found.

Andrew Hill, who lives on the second floor of the apartment building, told The Times he heard a lot of commotion on the floor above him at about 3 a.m. about three weeks ago. He said he heard furniture moving as well as screaming and yelling. He said spoke to police detectives Thursday and they asked him when the garbage was taken out.
Medellin's friend Vilma Aguilar told KCBS-TV that Medellin hiked through Griffith Park. During one hike last year, she said, he met a new friend. Medellin's severed head and body parts were found on a hiking trail in the park in Bronson Canyon.
Another friend told The Times that Medellin left the airline some time ago. The friend said she went to his apartment Friday after TV reports of the case Thursday but could not find him. She spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Medellin also once owned a Los Feliz condominium with another person, according to a resident who currently owns the property.
Los Angeles County coroner's officials declined to provide additional details about the victim because police have placed a security hold on the case, which prohibits them from releasing information.

The L.A. TV news sounds like the police are leaning towards roommate/boyfriend involvement.

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KTLA) -- The family of the man found dismembered along a Hollywood Hills hiking train is speaking out, saying they have no idea what could have happened.
Christina Serenyo, a niece of 66-year-old Hervey Medellin, told KTLA that the family is grief-stricken over the news.
For the last year, Medellin had shared a Hollywood apartment with his 30 year old boyfriend.
But Serenyo said she didn't even know her uncle was in a relationship until police notified her that he was dead.
Serenyo spoke with Medellin's boyfriend by phone over the weekend.
"He was just very short, that's all I could say," Serenyo told KTLA. "I don't know if he was agitated... I can't even guess. I don't know what happened."
Police have questioned the boyfriend several times, but he is reportedly not a suspect, or even a person of interest in the homicide.
He was reportedly concerned about Medellin's whereabouts a week before his head, hands and feet were found in Bronson Canyon Park.
Sources say he filed a missing person's report on Jan. 9.
He says he last saw Medellin in December, when he told him he was going to Mexico.
Meantime, detectives were at Medellin's third-floor apartment in the 6200 block of DeLongre Avenue for several hours on Saturday.
They took items from the home, and also impounded a car at the location.
Several search warrants have been issued, though there have been no arrests in the case.
Investigators previously served a search warrant at the apartment building on Thursday night, eventually towing a silver Honda from the building.
Andrew Hill, who lives on the second floor of the apartment building, told The Times he heard a lot of commotion on the floor above him at about 3 a.m. about three weeks ago.
He said he heard furniture moving as well as screaming and yelling.
He said he spoke to police detectives Thursday and they asked him when the garbage was taken out.
Coroner's officials say they were able to identify Medellin -- a retired Mexicana Airlines employee -- through fingerprints from one of the hands.
It remains unclear, however, if Medellin may have first been identified through a tip.
Police questioned at least one person on Thursday, and were looking to talk to at least one other man, according to the Times.
Detectives don't believe Medellin was murdered in his apartment, nor do they think he was killed at Bronson Canyon Park.
The park was reopened to the public after authorities concluded their search on Thursday.
They had been combing the area inch-by-inch since the initial discovery of a severed human head by two dog walkers on Tuesday along a trail near the 3200 block of Canyon Drive.
One of the dog walkers told reporters that two dogs started playing with an object they found in a plastic bag.
They took a closer look and realized the object was a human head.
On Wednesday, investigators using cadaver dogs recovered two hands and two feet.
In addition to scouring the park, police have questioned people who live in the area.
Neighbors say it's a popular trail, and that the unfolding murder mystery seems unreal.
"They wanted to know whether I'd seen anything or heard anything unusual," neighbor Jeff Young told KTLA, describing questions he was asked by police.
"Absolute, straight TV show questions from a cop," Young said, in disbelief.
