    The U.S. Border Patrol has halted a controversial pilot project to poison all plant life along a 1.1-mile stretch of the Rio Grande riverbank to eliminate the hiding places used by criminals.

    The $2.1 million project, which was to begin today, has been stopped indefinitely because of concerns raised by Mexican government officials, said Roque Sarinana, a spokesman for the Border Patrol’s Laredo Sector.
