Obama vows to keep at gun control: ‘This is just the first round’

Obama vows to keep at gun control: ‘This is just the first round’

(NBC News) – President Barack Obama vowed Thursday during a trip to Mexico to continue pushing for new, tighter gun control rules in the United States, saying his proposals’ recent defeat in Congress was “just the first round.”

Speaking following a meeting with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose country has been ravaged by gang violence supported in part by gun trafficking into Mexico, Obama vowed to return to the issue of gun control in the United States.

FAX BLAST SPECIAL: Don’t Let The Government Take Your Guns! Protect Your Second Amendment Rights!

“The last time we had major gun legislation, it took 6, 7, 8 tries to get passed,” Obama said at a press conference following his meeting with the Mexican president. “Things happen somewhat slowly in Washington, but this is just the first round.”

Democratic leaders in the Senate were forced to shelve a bipartisan proposal expanding background checks for firearms sold online and at gun shows when it failed to receive the requisite 60 votes to survive a filibuster threat. The measure’s Democratic proposal, West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, has vowed to fight to bring that proposal back up for another vote.

And in an article published Wednesday, the proposal’s Republican author, Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey, suggested that politics were afoot in many GOP senators’ decision to oppose the package.

“There were some on my side who did not want to be seen helping the president do something he wanted to get done, just because the president wanted to do it,” Toomey told local newspaper editors.

Congress is away from Washington this week for a scheduled recess, but the issue of guns has followed members back to their states and their districts. Gun control advocates have aired ads targeting key senators for their votes in their respective states, and Democratic groups have trailed New Hampshire Sen. Kelly Ayotte throughout her state this week to put public pressure on the first-term senator for her vote during public town hall meetings.

The president and his allies are relying on the fact that public opinion is largely on their side when it comes to the specific gun proposals being floated by the administration.

“When you’ve got 90 percent of the American people supporting the initiatives that we put forward … I believe that eventually we’re going to get that done, and I’m going to keep on trying,” he said.

Obama on Gun-control: 'This is just the first round.'

    Conservative American,

Speaking in Mexico, Barack Obama claimed Thursday that he will continue to push for "gun safety" measures in the United States, and that their recent defeat in the Senate was 'just the first round.'
After speaking personally with Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, Obama told the press: "The last time we had major gun legislation, it took 6, 7, 8 tries to get passed ... Things happen somewhat slowly in Washington, but this is just the first round."

Obama also said, speaking at the Mexican Anthropology Museum, that though he swore to uphold the Constitution - as, he claims, he "always will" - he "will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It's the right thing to do."

While the President can't "write" laws - ignoring executive orders, signing statements, and the like, for our discussion here - he can promote them and act as a powerful rallying agent. In other words, Obama can be the Cheerleader-in-Chief against guns and their owners' rights to bear them.

Harry Reid and John Boehner have already said multiple times that a gun-control bill will take a vote in their respective Houses of Congress. This is exactly why we must continue to demand our elected servants to stand firm against all forms of increased gun-control.

Take Action and Blast Faxes demanding that Congress opposes ALL FORMS of gun-control: as legislation or as amendments to legislation!

Mental health checks. Universal background checks. Magazine and weapons bans.

All of these "safety policies" have not been forgotten by the gun-grabbers, despite S. 649's clear defeat in late April.

Harry Reid said well before S. 649 even came to the floor for debate, that, should the bill and its amendments fail, he is prepared to take up each one of its components individually as its own bill. He reiterated this again after he tabled the "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act" on April 18 – he said, "It's only a matter of time before we bring this anti-gun-violence measure back to the floor for a vote."

While we saw a clear victory in April, the battle to defend gun rights is far from over. We must continue to demand that lawmakers do no additional damage to our Second Amendment rights!

Take Action and Blast Faxes demanding that Congress opposes ALL FORMS of gun-control: as legislation or as amendments to legislation!

The fact that seven out of nine amendments last week failed, due to, using Majority Leader Reid's words, "the stand of Republicans," serves to prove that our actions are taking affect. Our faxes, messages, and phone calls are making an impact!

Before the bill came to debate, only three GOP Senators expressly stated that they will oppose any and all bills that would debar Americans of their Second Amendment rights; this small number grew, over the course of a month, to include Senators from both sides of the aisle and ultimately forced the bill and its amendments to be removed from the Senate's chamber.

Sens. Cruz, Lee, and Paul are still leading the charge against gun-control, and remain committed to their pledge: that they "intend to oppose any legislation that would oppose on the American people's constitutional right to bear arms, or on their ability to exercise this right without being subjected to government surveillance."

Just as the Feinstein Bill was exchanged with Reid's "Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act," so the Reid Bill will soon be exchanged for another seemingly more "palatable" gun-control act. It's only a matter of time.

This is why Senators must remain committed to combating gun-control in any form and under any bill number.

We must continue to tell our elected leaders that we have not taken our eyes off of this very important Constitutional issue.

Take Action and Blast Faxes demanding that Congress opposes ALL FORMS of gun-control: as legislation or as amendments to legislation!

If the April votes signal anything, they tell us that there is overwhelming bipartisan support for "mental health checks." This was proven by the acceptance of the Harkin-Alexander Amendment #730, which passed with all but two votes – the two dissenting votes belonging to Sens. Mike Lee and Rand Paul.

This said, it would not be foolish to assume that the next bill that sees the Senate floor might be based around this effort as it is something that both parties clearly agree on.

It's not just mental health checks, though. Republicans and Democrats alike still wantuniversal background checks to become the rule. Yes, the Manchin-Toomey amendment failed, and GOP members voted against it, but that is not because those individuals were necessarily opposed to the idea as much as they were opposed to the particular verbiage that the West Virginia and Pennsylvania Senators used.

For example, consider the words of Arizona Senator Jeff Flake:
"I support background checks. In fact, I believe background checks need to be strengthened, particularly as they relate to those with mental illness. To this end I've cosponsored S.480 with Senators Graham, Begich, and Pryor clarifying who should not be able to obtain a firearm due to mental illness. I believe our approach is preferable, and more workable, than the mental illness provisions in Manchin-Toomey.

I have a great deal of respect for Senators Manchin and Toomey. I believe they are coming at this issue with the best of intentions.

But I will oppose the Manchin-Toomey amendment."
This is to show that Republicans, attempting to compromise, are willing to sell-out the Second Amendment – It's not just the notoriously anti-gun Democrats. Big Government GOP Senators are signaling that they are willing to trade our liberty in for "security."

This is why we must continue to demand that no attack on the Second Amendment are acceptable, that no further restrictions must intervene with our right to keep and bear arms. There are already hundreds of gun statutes on the books– some groups claim there are actually thousands – yet the founders only gave is one that said "the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."

We must continue to press our elected servants to defend our Second Amendment at all costs against so-called "common sense" reforms!

Take Action and Blast Faxes demanding that Congress opposes ALL FORMS of gun-control: as legislation or as amendments to legislation!

It is of the utmost importance that we continue to mobilize against all gun-control, as its proponents have by no means given up.

Majority Leader Harry Reid said "this issue is not going away ... we are not giving up," suggesting that he and his fellow gun-grabbers will keep pushing to ram through their Big Government agenda, despite their April 18 defeat.

Sen. Manchin of West Virginia echoed Harry Reid last week when he said that "this is not over."
In the House of Representatives, Rep. Nancy Pelosi also suggested that the gun-grabbers are not ready to give up. "We're just not taking ‘no' for an answer ... [we're] so disappointed," she said, "This is a fight we must win. It's a matter of time."

We must continue to demand lawmakers to stand against gun-control by taking action and blasting faxes, sending letters, and making phone calls!

Obama and the gun-grabbers know exactly what they want and are willing to go to any length to get it. This is why we must continue to keep our eyes on the Congressional gun-grabbers every move and demand lawmakers to prepare to oppose the next bad bill that they offer.

The Second Amendment must not be compromised...

Blast Faxes to U.S. House and Senate members demanding that they oppose any and all forms of gun-control legislation or amendments to legislation!
