Man shot and killed on Phoenix street, four suspects arrested

Four men are in custody after a fatal shooting on a central Phoenix street.

The driver of a pickup truck was killed about 11 p.m. Tuesday when a van stopped his vehicle at Seventh Avenue and the Maricopa Freeway access road, Police Sgt. Joel Tranter said.

``We believe that the people in the pickup truck were targeted and that the suspects' van was either following or monitoring the victims' actions," Tranter said. ``And then at one point the suspects just closed in and blocked them and began firing rounds, but we don't know specifically why."

Tranter said the pickup was headed westbound on the access road and had stopped at Seventh Avenue when the van, traveling eastbound, stopped ``nose to nose" in front of the truck. One or more men in the van jumped out, the driver of the pickup also got out.

The pickup driver was shot several times and killed.

Tranter said a passenger in the pickup ``we believe just scooted over, got in the driver's seat, backed the truck up and then he sped off."

The van chased him northbound on Interstate 17, and it's possible more shots were fired, Tranter said. The two vehicles got off the freeway at Camelback Road, the truck headed west and the van turned east.

Police stopped the van near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road.

``Marked Phoenix police units were able to close in. We made a high-risk traffic stop on that van... We took four suspects into custody, we also recovered a number of firearms," Tranter said.

He said police are still looking for the pickup truck and are working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to determine the immigration status of the victim and the suspects.

Wonder how long it's going to take for this stuff to spread to North Dakota, Washington State, New York, Vermont, Maine?
