Germany starts move to ban GMO crops: ministry letter

Germany has initiated a move to stop the growing of genetically modified crops under new European Union rules, documents seen by Reuters showed on Monday.
German Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt has informed German state governments of his intention to tell the EU that Germany will make use of new "opt-out" rules to stop GMO crop cultivation even if varieties have been approved by the EU, a letter from the agriculture ministry seen by Reuters shows.
A new EU law approved in March cleared the way for new GMO crops to be approved after years of previous deadlock. But the law also gave individual countries the right to opt out by banning GMO crops even after they have been approved as safe by the European Commission.
Widely-grown in the Americas and Asia, GMO crops have divided opinion in Europe. Britain is among those in favor of them, while France and Germany are among those opposed.
Previously, when the EU approved crops as safe to produce they had to be permitted for cultivation in all EU states.
In the letter, the ministry stressed that Schmidt is continuing a previously-announced policy to keep a ban on GMOs in Germany.
Under the new EU rules, countries have until Oct. 3, 2015, to inform the Commission that they wish to opt out of new EU GMO cultivation approvals, the ministry letter said.
Schmidt has asked German state authorities to say by Sept. 11 whether their region should be included in the opt-out, the letter said.

Russia joins more than 30 other countries that have banned the import of GE crops. Also despite the harms of GE crops, giant biotech is pouring thousands of dollars to defeat GMO labeling in the state of Oregon.

The giant agribusinesses have so far donated $455,000 to Good Neighbor Farmers in Jackson County in order to defeat GMO initiative labeling in Oregon. In the last few years, giant biotech has spent more than $67 million in California and Washington to kill GMO labeling.
GE crops are planted on 12% of the world’s farm land in 28 different countries. In EU only two GMO varieties have been licensed for commercial harvesting and GMO foods are accordingly labeled. However, in US, there are more than 96 GMO varieties and so far only few states including Hawaii, Alaska, Connecticut and Maine have been able to pass GMO labeling bill.

Recently even Russia and China have banned the import of GE foods. In fact, US farmers have lost more than $427 million in sales after China rejected the imports of US corn. Russia has also imposed a ban on GE products saying that its nation has enough space and resources to produce organic and sustainable foods.
“Moscow has no reason to encourage the production of genetically modified products or import them into the country”, said the country’s Prime Minister Medvedev. “If the Americans like to eat GMO products, let them eat it then. We don’t need to do that; we have enough space and opportunities to produce organic foods.”
Recently, the Russian parliament suggested a norm set for the maximum allowable content of transgenic foods for Russian manufacturers that produce foods with GE ingredients. When the percentage of GMO exceeds 0.9%, the producer must label its products accordingly and warn the consumers.
More than 30 countries have banned GMO crops, but powerful biotech and chemical lobby including GMA (Grocery Manufacturing Association) have introduced a dark and devious legislation through Congress that would kill states GMO labeling efforts:

The biotech and chemical companies are shoving ‘Agent Orange Corn’ down our throats while countries like China and Russia have banned the imports of GE products.
Not only biotech is hiding their toxins in our food supply, they recently have introduced a new bill to Congress in order to outlaw GMO labeling. The bill is introduced by US Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and is meant to forbid states from mandating GMO labeling. Find out how Koch Industries and Monsanto have teamed up to kill ‘Your Right to Know’: http://seattleorganicrestaurants.com...orn-import.php
While 90% of Americans want their foods labeled, the biotech and chemical companies spend thousands of dollars to keep the public in dark.

House Passes DARK Act, Banning States From Requiring GMO Labels on Food

    Stefanie Spear | July 24, 2015 10:58 am | Comments

Legislation dubbed the Deny Americans the Right to Know, or DARK Act (H.R. 1599), passed the House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 275-150. The bill preempts state and local authority to label and regulate genetically engineered (GE) foods. A Senate version of this bill has not yet been introduced.

The bill, backed largely by House Republicans, codifies a voluntary labeling system approach, blocks the U.S. Food and Drug Administration from ever implementing mandatory GE food labeling and allows food companies to continue to make misleading “natural” claims for foods that contain GE ingredients.
A number of farm state Democrats joined House Republicans in passing the bill. Twelve Republicans voted against the bill citing infringement of states’ rights and local control.
“It’s outrageous that some House lawmakers voted to ignore the wishes of nine out of 10 Americans,” said Scott Faber, senior vice president of government affairs for Environmental Working Group (EWG). “Today’s vote to deny Americans the right to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown was a foregone conclusion. This House was bought and paid for by corporate interests, so it’s no surprise that it passed a bill to block states and the FDA from giving consumers basic information about their food.”
More than 300 organizations, companies and food industry and social justice leaders oppose the DARK Act in the face of massive spending and lobbying by big chemical and food companies, according to EWG. Polls show a large majority of people in key states and across the country support mandatory GMO labeling.
“We’re confident the Senate will defeat the DARK Act,” added Faber. “We continue to hope that thoughtful food companies that listen to their customers will work with consumer groups to craft a non-judgmental GMO disclosure to put on the back of food packaging. Americans should have the same right as citizens of 64 other countries to know what’s in their food and how it’s grown.”

The findings of cancerous tumors in rats and pre cancerous inflammation in pigs fed GMOs is more than enough reason to ban or at least label.

To put Agent Orange and glyphosate, RoundUp, into our foods is beyond the pale for greedy corporations - they desire to monopolize food & seed; sell more of their super weed killer while they kill plant, man, creature for profits. To have the government OK this & give carte blanche' for the use of these products is not acceptable.

Oh yes, I totally agree. I've been onto this GMO thing for years. I believe they're responsible for the death and decline of the honey bees. It all started happening at the same time. The initial studies submitted to FDA showed the GMO products killed bees, birds and small animals that eat the seeds, plants and pollen.

That Round-Up is some Nasty stuff. What troubles me most is the "GMO will increase yields so we can feed the Worlds Hungry", but Monsanto has infiltrated OUR Laws to SUE anyone who replants any seeds from previous years crops. There are some crops they have Genetically Engineered to NOT AVE ANY SEEDS, so you will forced to BUY NEW SEEDS EVERY YEARS. "FEED the HUNGRY PEOPLE AFTER YOU PAY US"- Monsanto

I took a few Community College Business(BUS) Courses a few years ago, and there were a couple of my Textbooks who had Monsanto by name in them, stating how good and ethical Monsanto was. Along with a couple of Health Books saying how great Margret Sanger was.
