Boehner on Immigration: “Hellbent on Getting It Done” This Year

Boehner on Immigration: “Hellbent on Getting It Done” This Year

Posted by Jim Hoft on Friday, April 18, 2014, 8:05 AM

Speaker John Boehner told donors he would move on immigration. In March he said was “hellbent on getting this done this year.”
    The Wall Street Journal reported:
Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections.
Many lawmakers and activists have assumed the issue was off the table in an election year. But Mr. Boehner said at a Las Vegas fundraiser last month he was “hellbent on getting this done this year,” according to two people in the room.
A spokesman for Mr. Boehner didn’t dispute the account but said no action is possible until President Barack Obama proves himself a trustworthy partner to Republicans.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R., Va.), chairman of the HouseJudiciary Committee, delivered an upbeat message about legislative prospects during a recent trip to Silicon Valley, said Carl Guardino, chief executive of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, who hosted his visit.
He said Mr. Goodlatte told him action in 2014 was “entirely possible,” likely in the form of votes this summer on five to seven immigration bills. A spokeswoman for Mr. Goodlatte declined to comment on the exchange.
Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R., Fla.) also is drafting legislation that would give qualifying undocumented immigrants legal status and the chance to apply for citizenship through existing channels. The bill includes border-security measures and an effort to clear the backlog of applications for permanent legal status, known as green cards.
House leaders have told Mr. Diaz-Balart to have the legislation ready to go for possible debate in June or July, an aide said.

    A tale of two Boehners

So which Boehner is telling the truth? Does he really want to compromise to do immigration reform or is he saying immigration is dead until we can get a president we can trust?
    Boehner in February:

“The president seems to change the health care law on a whim, whenever he likes.

“Now, he is running around the country telling everyone he’s going to keep acting on his own. He keeps talking about his phone and his pen.
“And he’s feeding more distrust about whether he is committed to the rule of law.

“Listen, there’s widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws.

“It’s going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes.”

    Boehner since February:

Speaker John Boehner and other senior House Republicans are telling donors and industry groups that they aim to pass immigration legislation this year, despite the reluctance of many Republicans to tackle the divisive issue before the November elections.

A spokesman for Mr. Boehner didn’t dispute the account but said no action is possible until President Barack Obama proves himself a trustworthy partner to Republicans.
I know what Mr. Spokesman is saying, but I’m just not sure I can reconcile the two statements like he did. There should be no reason Boehner is hellbent on doing immigration if the president can’t be trusted to enforce the laws, and clearly he can’t be.

So which Boehner is telling the truth? Does he really want to compromise to do immigration reform or is he saying immigration is dead until we can get a president we can trust?

REPORT: BOEHNER 'HELLBENT' ON PASSING AMNESTY THIS YEAR

    by TONY LEE 18 Apr 2014, 5:48 AM PDT 1235POST A COMMENT

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) is "hellbent" on passing amnesty legislation, and other GOP leaders are signaling to donors and lobbyists that they also want to pass legislation this Congress, even though attempting to do so would depress the GOP base and create divisions within the party ahead of 2014's midterm elections that could give Republicans control of Congress.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Boehner told donors at a Las Vegas fundraiser in March that he was "hellbent on getting this done this year." After he met with President Barack Obama at the White House in February, Boehner said that he agreed with Obama on immigration during the meeting.
Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), the Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, also reportedly delivered an "upbeat message about legislative prospects during a recent trip to Silicon Valley" where he attended a fundraiser in which donors who wanted more high-tech visas paid $10,000 to $40,000 to hear him speak. He told attendees that votes on five to seven pieces of legislation were "entirely possible," according to the Journal.
As Breitbart News has reported, Goodlatte's "SKILLS" Act, which is also backed by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and has passed out of committee, "would also double the number of H1-B visas that the high-tech industry covets." However, numerous studies have shown that the notion that there is a shortage of high-tech American workers is a myth.
In addition, the Journal noted that Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL), who said that Obama would act unilaterally if amnesty legislation was not passed, is also drafting "legislation that would give qualifying undocumented immigrants legal status and the chance to apply for citizenship through existing channels." House leaders have reportedly told Diaz-Balart to have the legislation ready by June or July.

Amnesty proponents are reportedly divided on whether to push for legislation now or possibly in the next Congress, when Republicans could control both chambers. Pro-amnesty advocates think that Boehner, if he does not retire, and Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), if he becomes Majority Leader, may try to push through legislation to try to help the party's 2016 nominee with Hispanics, even though there is no data to indicate that Hispanics would become Republicans if the party passes amnesty legislation.

Other pro-amnesty advocates believe that if Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) heads the Senate Judiciary Committee next year, amnesty legislation may be more difficult to get through, according to the Journal.
Since top Democrats like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) have said that this was the last chance for widespread amnesty legislation, more donors and lobbyists do not want to take chances and want legislation this year.
Momentum for immigration legislation has stalled after Sens. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Jeff Sessions (R-AL) denounced the House GOP leadership's "immigration principles" as "amnesty," as Breitbart News reported. And even though Obama may enact administrative measures -- like giving detained immigrants bond hearings -- Republicans believe momentum will stall even more if Obama caves to those who are falsely calling him the "deporter in chief" and enacts more unilateral measures to halt deportations or grant more temporary amnesty to various groups of illegal immigrants.
Amnesty opponents have thought Boehner's endgame is to pass amnesty legislation this year ever since he hired Rebecca Tallent, who was Sen. John McCain's (R-AZ) top amnesty aide, as his chief immigration adviser last year. Big-business interests and high-tech lobbying groups like Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's FWD.us group have indicated they are willing to pour in millions this spring to try to get amnesty legislation across the finish line.

Sen. Sessions: Boehner's 'Hellbent' Amnesty Push Could 'Sacrifice' GOP 'Credibility'

by Matthew Boyle 18 Apr 2014, 12:52 PM PDT
    breitbart.com

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL) said Friday that House Speaker John Boehner’s comments that he is "hellbent" on granting amnesty to illegal aliens in 2014 could destroy the GOP’s chances of winning American voters.

“A weary public has begged and pleaded for years with their elected officials to end the lawlessness,” Sessions said in a statement.

    He added:

"But from their comfortable station in Washington, President Obama and congressional Democrats have ignored the public pleas. Instead, they have put their collective weight behind an immigration bill that delivers a sweeping amnesty for open borders groups and a huge guest worker surge for corporations. Now, The Wall Street Journal reports that House GOP leaders are considering a plan to move an apparently similar immigration plan this summer."

Sessions was referring to a new Wall Street Journal report that detailed that Boehner told a private meeting of donors and supporters that he is “hellbent” on moving forward this year on amnesty.

In response to the WSJ piece and a surge of outrage from new media and the right, Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck downplayed Boehner’s amnesty support. "Nothing has changed,” Buck said, implying immigration efforts remain stalled in Congress. “As he's said many times, the Speaker believes step-by-step reform is important, but it won't happen until the President builds trust and demonstrates a commitment to the rule of law.”

But Sessions warned that if Boehner and other House GOP leaders like Majority Leader Eric Cantor try to move on immigration in 2014, they could hurt the Republican Party’s chances of regaining trust with voters across America.

    Sessions asserted:

"At a time when trust in the President is at record lows, Republicans should not sacrifice their own credibility with such a maneuver. Such action would represent a colossal breach of the public trust: saying one thing before the primaries and then doing another thing after. Republican leaders must recognize that our party is now the last line of defense for American workers. We must proudly embrace this responsibility. Republicans must expose the harm the administration has done—not join it in delivering a hammer blow to the middle class."

ADD ENTIRE DREAM ACT - A Trojan Horse on amnesty in the defense bill?

Because it’s a Trojan Horse — if it’s included in the must-pass defense authorization bill when it’s sent to the Senate, Harry Reid can expand it into a larger amnesty confident in the knowledge that it would have to be passed. I’ve been told by a Republican House member that the Democrat (and, presumably, “hellbent” House leadership) plan is to add the entire DREAM Act to the defense bill once it gets to the Senate
