Boehner Killed Amnesty for 2014? Not A Chance – Insiders Say It’s Still On Track

Big news on the immigration front today. If you haven’t heard, House Speaker John Boehner killed amnesty for the year. The Drudge headline yelled the punchline: “BOEHNER DROPS AMNESTY”.

    Or did he?

Washington insiders say he did no such thing, and that the push for amnesty is still on track.

    Here’s what Boehner actually said:

This is an important issue in our country. It’s been kicked around forever, and it needs to be dealt with,” he said. But “frankly, one of the biggest obstacles we face is the one of trust. The American people, including many of our members, don’t trust that the reform we’re talking about will be implemented as it was intended to be. The president seems to change the health-care law on a whim, whenever he likes.”

“There’s widespread doubt about whether this administration can be trusted to enforce our laws. And it’s going to be difficult to move any immigration legislation until that changes,” Boehner said.

I’m going to continue to talk to my members about how to move forward, but the president is going to have to do his part as well,” Boehner said.

Twice Boehner indicates he wants to get amnesty done. And twice he indicates Obama will have to make some sort of gesture to make it happen. Hardly a definitive “killing” of the amnesty push for 2014.
And Capitol Hill staffers and interest groups make it clear the Speaker and the House GOP leadership have no intention of letting this go.

A U.S. Chamber of Commerce source told Top Right News that Boehner is just letting things “cool off” after a contentious immigration retreat, and that there is plenty of time to introduce the “piecemeal” approach already planned to get to a Senate “conference” compromise bill. The original plan still in place to ram through amnesty after the Tea Party threat in the GOP primaries is over.

And a Hill staffer told The Daily Caller that “he expects Boehner and the business groups to focus opponents on the issue of trust — and then suddenly disarm them with a dramatic but meaningless announcement by the president. That announcement could be the appointment of a business-backed GOP legislator to run the Department of Homeland Security”, the staffer said.

Several journalists friendly with the House GOP leadership dismissed Boehner’s statement as an obvious effort to fool conservatives, a ploy which follows Paul Ryans’ odd downplaying of the chances for amnesty earlier this week:

Please. When Boehner says "can't trust Obama on immigration," he's just telling conservatives what they want to hear. Transparent.

Boehner's tough talk doesn't mean immigration reform's dead btw. This is probably how he needs to frame it in any successful scenario.

Conn Carroll of Townhall says “Don’t believe any of it for a second. If anything, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) opened the door wider for immigration reform this year. But only if President Obama is willing to pass the rest of the House Republican leadership jobs agenda.” A bargaining chip.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Boehner was simply “cooling things off.

‘Gang of 8′ ringleader New York Sen. Chuck Schumer — who held secret meetings with Paul Ryan 2 days ago to strategize on how to push through amnesty — also downplayed Boehner’s statement. “I’m not thrown back by it,” he said.

Amnesty dead? Not so fast. With $52 million already spent, and tens of millions yet to go, it isn’t over by a longshot.

you also need to keep in mind that the Republican ESTABLISHMENT is NO DIFFERENT than the Democrat ESTABLISHMENT. 1. They are Self Serving; and 2. Wad's of 20.00 Dollar Bills are being flashed around like candy to children. Dont think it takes Millions to get these politicians salivating; it does not. They are there for the Highest bidder and if there is NOT one they will back off until one shows up. A few Beads and Trinkets "Bribes" is all it takes
