Did DHS/DOJ Immigration/Border Press Briefing Help McCain?

I can't help but wonder if the Chertoff/Mukasey immigration/border security press briefing on 2-22-08 in which they stated their intentions to crack down on illegal immigration, secure the borders, and enforce current immigration laws was, in part, deliberately timed to garner more conservative support for John McCain. Any thoughts?

Yes, I think it is possible. I also wonder if they feel they have to say something now that it is evident that attrition through enforcement is working in AZ and OK.

And perhaps to try to curb some of the individual state's efforts to adopt their own legislation?

I hadn't thought of that but certainly wouldn't doubt it. We need to keep pressure on the states like never before.
