Gun burglary attempt tied to Journal News gun owner map

Fears expressed about potential dangers of an anti-gun newspaper publishing detailed maps revealing who owns guns have evidently materialized, New York State Senator Greg Ball stated today in a press release.
What ethical considerations must a paper take to ensure that selling these or pushing an agenda do not take priority over the safety of its readers?

Ball “announced that a burglary has been reported on Davis Ave. in White Plains, New York that evidently ties into The Journal News gun maps,” the release revealed. “It is reported that the burglar used The Journal News’ interactive gun map to target a home included on the map. Luckily the gun was locked up and no one was hurt.”
“The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs,” Ball accused. “If the connection is proven, this is further proof that these maps are not only an invasion of privacy but that they present a clear and present danger to law-abiding, private citizens.”
Senator Ball will be unveiling legislation tomorrow, S2132, to protect citizens from having such information publicly disclosed. That such information exists to be abused in the first place is a source of contention among activist gun owners.
As Gun Rights Examiner reported earlier this month, concerns of repercussions from the paper’s actions included a former burglar calling the interactive map a “gold mine,” a female stalking victim receiving harassing phone calls, and a retired police officer who took pains to keep a low profile as a safeguard against revenge being pinpointed despite his precautions.
Gannett, the company that owns the Journal News, has not responded to an inquiry from Gun Rights Examiner to investigate what appear to be clear violations of its ethics policy that the publisher and editor of their holding willfully committed.
