A letter (for what it is worth) to my Republican Senator
Dear Senator,
As I watched our President speak on television today I felt sick to my stomach. These days, anytime I see him, I am repulsed. A man I once admired, that I voted for twice, has completely destroyed my confidence in him.
I am a life long Republican believing in hard work and honesty to excel. I believe in the rule of law and equal enforcement. These are principals upon which my party was founded and embraced until recently.
I'm quickly losing my belief in my party the way I lost belief in my President. When I see Senator Graham calling me a bigot because I don't believe in amnesty, I have no respect for him. He doesn't stand for Republican principles.
When I hear Senator Jon Kyl proclaim that we have a bipartisan bill that will end our immigration problems only to find out that the bill hurts citizens and legal immigrants but rewards illegal immigrants, my respect is once again lost.
When I hear about the backroom dealings and secret negotiations, I lose respect for my party. When I find out that this bill circumvented standard policy and games were played with such an important bill, I lose even more respect for my party.
Just because the President is willing to turn his back on the principles of the Republican party, doesn't mean you should as well.
You are my only Republican representation in Washington. If you vote in favor of this bill, I and many like me will have no choice but to abandon our party.
If you and other Republican Senators have any concern what is right for the American people and for the life of this once great institution, you will rally to kill this bill.
There is not a single thing in this bill that makes it good for America.
The trade off for the obvious bad of this ill conceived plan is the promise of enforcement. I hope you know that when we hear that our border will be enforced "this time" we laugh. We know it is one giant lie. The same lie told over and over since 1986.
None of your constituents believe that a bad bill is better than no bill at all. Please help put an end to this terrible, terrible piece of legislation and start over. American citizens deserve better than this. Please don't settle for good enough. This may sound very dramatic but I honestly believe it, the future of the Republican Party depends on the death of S 1348.
Sincerely,
