Democrat Introduces 'Keeping the Promise of IRCA Act' as Alternative to Amnesty
For those of us looking for an alternative to the Gang of Eight's bombastic attempt to reform the nation's immigration system with amnesty for illegal aliens, massive increases in legal immigration, and only promises of future enforcement, we now have a bill to rally behind!
Earlier today, Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.) introduced a bill, Keeping the Promise of IRCA Act, that would require all businesses to use E-Verify, finally secure our border, and give the men and women tasked with enforcing immigration laws the tools and resources necessary to do so.
Rep. Barrow introduced his bill on Thursday at a press conference where he was joined by ICE Union President, Chris Crane.
"This legislation is a critical first step to any comprehensive immigration reform. We can't agree to a policy of amnesty now and border security later -- we've been down that road before."
    --Rep. John Barrow (D-Ga.)

"On behalf of ICE Officers, I applaud Congressman Barrow's efforts to provide for stronger interior enforcement of our nation's immigration laws. We are grateful for a Congressman who recognizes and works with law enforcement."
    --Chris Crane, ICE Union President
    Rep. Barrow's bill would:

    • Require E-Verify for all employers within 2 years
    • Increase penalties for making/selling/using fake or stolen documents
    • Restrict SCAAP (law enforcement) funding for sanctuary cities
    • Increase the number of ICE agents
    • Require ICE agents to be stationed at every federal, state, and county jail or prison and work with state drug or gang task forces that request assistance
    • Increase the number of detention beds for ICE
    • Increase the number of judges, clerks, and prosecutors to process immigration violators
    • Deny certain visas for countries that refuse to repatriate illegal aliens ordered deported
    • Achieve operational control of the entire border
    • Require full implementation of entry/exit system at all ports within 2 years
    • Require equipment sharing between Department of Defense and Border Patrol

Two recent polls show that the vast majority of Americans want to see our borders secured before dealing with other areas of immigration reform. A Fox News poll released just yesterday found that 73% of Americans support border security FIRST. A Washington Post/ABC Poll found that by a 2-to-1 margin, Americans prefer border security before amnesty.
We've posted new faxes to your Action Board, urging your Members of Congress to cosponsor Rep. Barrow's bill. We've also posted several other new faxes this week, so check your Board and make sure you've taken all your actions.
Tomorrow morning, be on the lookout for an action alert from Roy with some more encouraging news. Plus, over the next few days, you'll receive another email from our Local Activism Coordinator Melanie Oubre. She'll be sending along activism ideas for next week's holiday recess. This is likely the last chance Senators will be back home before the Senate takes up the Gang of Eight's bill.
