Vote to Re-Authorize E-Verify Expected Before Summer Recess

CongressDaily reports today that House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers (D-Mich.) and Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) expect to hold a House floor vote on a bill to extend the E-Verify program before the August recess.

The current law that authorizes E-Verify is set to expire November 1. The lawmakers may use H.R. 5596, a measure sponsored by Rep. Ken Calvert (R-Calif.) that reauthorizes the program through 2018 without making other changes, or select another bill. CongressDaily notes that, “Lofgren and Conyers plan to bring the bill to the House floor under suspension of the rules, which means members would not be allowed to amend it.â€
