Chavez nuclear talk aimed at US

    June 30, 2007

MOSCOW: Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez yesterday implied Venezuela could attempt to become a nuclear power, during a visit to Russia apparently timed to antagonise the White House.
Mr Chavez defended Iran's right to pursue a nuclear program and said it could be a good idea if Venezuela some day did the same thing.

"Iran has a right to have a peaceful atomic energy industry, as it is a sovereign country," Mr Chavez said.

"The Brazilian President (Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva) has declared his atomic energy initiatives, and Brazil has a right to do that as well. Who knows, maybe Venezuela will ultimately follow suit."

At the start of an official trip to Russia, Mr Chavez railed against the US and called on Moscow to help lead a global revolution against Washington.

Accusing the US of "imposing tyranny", he said a "revolution" was under way against US global power and that Russia was a key player.

"They don't want Russia to keep rising but Russia has risen again as a centre of power and we, the people of the world, need Russia, and China, to become stronger every day," Mr Chavez said at a colourful ceremony opening a Latin American cultural centre in Moscow.

Mr Chavez said he wanted a "multi-polar" world in which "real freedom" was possible as opposed to "American freedom", which he characterised as the right to "threaten other nations and destroy cities".

Later, Mr Chavez went for dinner outside Moscow with President Vladimir Putin, who has made a priority of attacking what he calls Washington's attempt to dominate the world and who welcomed Mr Chavez, saying "talks on economic affairs and military technical ties" were on the agenda.

Mr Chavez will also attend a horse race in southern Russia with Mr Putin before continuing his tour with visits to Belarus and Iran, two countries that Washington considers to be run by outlaw regimes.

The warm welcome here for Mr Chavez was likely to provoke Washington just days before Mr Putin flies to the US for key talks with President George W. Bush on tensions over US missile defence plans.

However, the Kremlin showed signs of wanting to tone down the Chavez visit, analysts said, pointing to a decision by the pro-Putin parliament not to invite him to make a formal address todeputies, aware of the US's hardline stance against Mr Chavez.

Chavez has also threatened that if we go into Iran, he will give his operatives in the U.S. the signal to start terrorist activities.
