Solve jail problems by deporting illegals
Solve jail problems by deporting illegals
Published Friday, June 6, 2008
The June 2 editorial, "South Carolina jails primed for a disaster," states that the state Corrections Department needs an extra $4.3 million to meet its costs.
A few months ago, you reported that Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner wants to build regional jails at another huge cost to us, the taxpayers.
I think someone is missing the point. Why are these facilities crowded? Because undocumented or illegal people who have broken the law are taking up space there. The solution is easy -- send these lawbreakers home.
Presently, our system dictates that they serve time for their crimes in our jails, then maybe get sent home. Let them go home after being found guilty and never allow them to return. That would be punishment enough.
Call or e-mail your state and county elected officials if you agree.
