In State Tuition for Illegals Still a Risk: CAIR
Got this email from CAIR
In State Tuition for Illegals Still a Risk
Thank you for all your efforts to stop this Mini-Amnesty. Our watchdogs are keeping tabs on this warning:
The bill is dead for the year, but the issue may not be
"Democratic Sen. Chris Romer, who sponsored the bill, said Colorado is one of three states that won't be able to offer in-state tuition to its illegal immigrant students even if Congress passes the DREAM Act, which stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors. The federal measure would allow illegal immigrants enrolled in college to become legal residents.
But a bill passed with bipartisan support during Colorado's 2006 special legislative session on illegal immigration bars giving state benefits to illegal immigrants with limited exceptions, such as emergency medical care.
Romer said other bills pending in the Legislature could be amended to prevent that 2006 law from stopping the state from offering in-state tuition to illegal immigrants should the DREAM Act pass."

The following paragraph is what would allow the Federal Dream Act to be applied in CO. This is part of the Amendment passed at the Appropriations Committee hearing, but that ultimately failed with 170 on the Senate floor:
24-76.5-103. Verification of lawful presence - exceptions -
reporting - rules. (3) Verification of lawful presence in the United
States shall not be required:
(h) FOR PERSONS DESCRIBED IN SECTION 23-7-110, C.R.S., WHO ARE CLASSIFIED AS IN-STATE STUDENTS FOR TUITION PURPOSES SOLELY PURSUANT TO SAID SECTION.".
