A Success Story From ALIPAC member...

Hey Y'all! For those of you that are new to ALIPAC, I gave a speech last year (March2006) in Cullman, Alabama on the courthouse steps. About 700 people were in attendance. Anyway, in my speech, I tried to touch on a little bit of everything, numbers, cost, financing, ect...Well, I got to local financing, HICA (Hispanic Coalition of Alabama). I stated that half of the money they received in fiscal year 2005, was from the United Way, almost $40,000...
Well, this morning I was reading my paper and I stumbled across an article that peaked my interest. Please note that they did not give money to HICA in 2006...I think we have a victory here!

United Way agencies absorb $60,000 drop in contributions

In a departure from previous down years of fundraising, the United Way of Morgan County did not equally distribute cutbacks among its 24 agencies.

Three agencies even received increases. Overall, 15 agencies took cuts, as well as the United Way administrative/fundraising staff, while six agencies remained level funded.

Because the United Way fell short of its fundraising goal last year, it had $60,000 less to give to its agencies.

The agencies started receiving their new allocations in July. The 2008 fundraiser begins later this month.

The Boys and Girls Club took the largest cut, 17 percent, compared to last year's allocation. It dropped from $146,379 to $120,000. Only one of the top five funded agencies did not receive a cut, the Volunteer Center of Morgan County, which was level funded at $92,000.

United Way Executive Director George Pollitt said the nearly 40-member Allocations Committee considered each agency allotment on merit, need and other sources of fundraising.

The latter is the main reason Habitat for Humanity saw its funding cut in half to $5,000. Habitat began operating a home improvement warehouse in 2006. This year, the committee also gave more weight to agencies that could document how their efforts improved the community.

That helped Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Morgan County get an increase from $48,000 to $54,789, Pollitt said.

The Arc of Morgan County and Community Action Partnership of North Alabama's Foster Grandparents/Senior Companions programs were the other two agencies to see increases.

United Way also boosted its funding of the 2-1-1 program, a hot line for connecting residents with the proper agency during a crisis.

It received $25,000, which was $10,000 more than last year.

    United Way: Who gets what

If any of our activists have success stories like this to share, please write them up and ask me to make them a sticky.

We need to exchange ideas like this and show what one person, or a group, can do when you try.
