(IBD) Can House Stop U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Gun Grab Threatening 2nd Amendment?
Posted by Daniel John Sobieski on November 24, 2012 at 11:43am
Second Amendment: A House resolution, as futile as it may be, represents growing opposition to another administration bow to the U.N. encroachment on U.S. sovereignty at the expense of its laws and even our Constitution.
Treaties are ratified by a two-thirds majority of the Senate, and the final version of the U.N.'s Arms Trade Treaty (ATT) may likely be signed by this president and ratified by this Senate, especially if presented as a "sensible restriction" on international arms trafficking with no impact on our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.
But some House members are not going to let it happen without a justified protest.
Before the House left for the Thanksgiving break, Rep. Mike Kelly, R-Pa., unveiled a resolution to make the treaty not binding and let no federal funds implement it unless the Senate consents and Congress passes implementing legislation.
The resolution is co-sponsored by 76 other House members, including some Democrats.
"There is considerable cause for alarm regarding the U.N.'s renewed efforts to forge an Arms Trade Treaty that could trample the constitutional rights of Americans and seriously compromise our national security and the security of our allies, whom we will be less able to arm and less quick to defend due to the restrictions placed on us by the ATT," Kelly said.
One of their key objections is with the requirement in the July draft of the treaty — which will be the starting point for final negotiations — for each member state to keep records on "end users," or gun purchasers, for a minimum of 10 years.
Hence, Americans who purchase an imported firearm may have to be registered in the country of origin. Ammunition could also be tracked and logged the same way.
We have argued, as do Kelly and his colleagues, that even if it applied only to transfers of small arms between nations, would that mean restrictions on our ability to aid allies such as Israel and Taiwan?
Would we be forbidden from aiding resistance movements around the world rising up against the very dictators who support this treaty?

Can House Stop U.N. Arms Trade Treaty Gun Grab?

The treaty establishes a bizarre moral equivalence between countries that trade arms to defend freedom and those that do so to suppress and extinguish it.
In June, 150 members of Congress sent a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton warning that the treaty is "likely to pose significant threats to our national security, foreign policy and economic interests as well as our constitutional rights."

We informed you that just 24 hours after being re-elected the Obama Administration went to the U.N to support re-introducing the UN Arms Trade Treaty. We warned that this would be just the beginning of this Administration going after our guns and that is just the case.
New Assault Ban, Worse Than Before
Feinstein Planning Weapons Ban
Reports have been made public that just days before the election Senator Dianne Feinstein of California had been working on an assault weapons ban in order to have it ready for the beginning of this term.
This is not simply a copy and paste of Clinton's assault weapons ban that expired in 2004, this is much worse.
The previous Assault Weapons Ban was passed during a democratic controlled Congress in 1994 and expired in 2004. Experts say it did little to reduce violence. From 2008-2010 gun-related murder and manslaughter dropped 11%, this of course was with no Assault Weapons Ban in place.
The legislation Feinstein has been working on according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation would include:
- No high capacity magazines (over 10 rounds)
- No pistol grips allowed
- No 'grandfathering'
- No sale permissible if in possession
In President Clinton's assault weapons ban grandfathering was permitted meaning if you already were in possession of one of these banned weapons you were permitted to keep it. In Feinstein's legislation if you remain in possession of one of these banned weapons once the ban takes place you must modify it, turn it in to the Government, or you would be committing a crime.
Just to give an idea of who is creating this weapons ban, who is presenting it to Congress, and what she stands for. Here is a quote from Senator Feinstein concerning guns in America:"If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an OUTRIGHT BAN, picking up every one of them . . . Mr. and Mrs. America, turn 'em all in, I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren't here."
This proves that every little piece of gun control legislation these gun grabbers submit is just to reach their ultimate goal of an outright ban. They will tell you they just want something small that everyone can agree upon. That is just to get the snowball rolling. They will take away our guns one piece at a time until we are left with some scraps of metal.
Our Government should stop trying to take away guns from law abiding citizens and concentrate on taking them away from criminals. For Operation Fast and Furious they decided to give savage drug cartels hundreds of weapons that have been responsible in a laundry list of crimes including the death of one of our very own Border Patrol officers. As they say, gun control is not about guns, it's about control.
The next four years are not going to be easy. America bought into the lies, liberal media bias, and the Obama campaign's smoke and mirrors act. OUR SECOND AMENDMENT RIGHTS ARE IN JEOPARDY NOW MORE THAN EVER BEFORE IN AMERICAN HISTORY. President Obama has made it clear he is seeking more gun control. If he passed everything he wanted the only people left with firearms would be criminals. Gun control affects law abiding citizens not criminals. There will always be a way for them to get weapons. We will not surrender to the Obama agenda, you can make a difference.
Sincerely Yours,
Alan M. Gottlieb
