77% want illegals sent home, 81% say it's a serious issue

    By Paul Bedard | July 28, 2014 | 9:21 am
    Washington Examiner

A huge majority of Americans, 81 percent, believe the new immigration crisis of unaccompanied children streaming over the U.S.-Mexico border is serious, and almost as many want them gone -- some even if it's not safe to return, according to a new poll.

In an Economist/YouGov.com survey, however, the public isn't heartless in how they view the plight of the children, with 66 percent expressing sympathy for their situation that drove them north, where U.S. Border Control officers are catching the new arrivals for immigration processing.

But while there is an understanding among many Americans that some of the children are fleeing violence in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, a majority, 57 percent, believe the illegal immigrants are coming to America because they believe “that the U.S. government is or will be granting amnesty to undocumented immigrant children,” said the new poll.

The poll is the latest to show that the nation doesn’t believe the president’s immigration policies are working. And it is proof that most want the flow of illegals into the United States slowed or shut off.

While 77 percent said they want the illegals returned, there are different degrees in how fast it should be done. For example, 10 percent said that Border Control should just return the children to the Mexican border. Another 32 percent said that the children should be returned home “regardless of conditions in their home country,” and 35 percent said they should be returned “only if” conditions are safe.

And for those allowed to stay temporarily, the public is split evenly on whether unaccompanied children should be housed in their state or in another state.

The poll also revealed that the crisis has become a drag on President Obama. “The approval rating of the president on immigration, like his approval ratings on many other issues, is negative. A majority disapproves, and only a third approve. But the evaluation of the president is even worse among those who would deport the child migrants as soon as possible: only 16 percent in that group approve of how Barack Obama is handling immigration. Those who want the children to stay until they can be returned safely approve of the president's performance,” said the poll analysis.

Turns Out, Percentage of Americans Who Agree On the Immigration Crisis is Massive

Turns Out, The Percentage of Americans Who Agree On the Immigration Crisis is Surprisingly Massive

By Michael Hausam 6 hours ago

Have 77% of Americans ever agreed on anything? Turns out, yes: Immigration.

An Economist/YouGov.com poll on issues related to immigration found the following:

    • 81% believe that the problem is serious.

    • 77% believe they should be returned to their country of origin

    • 66% express strong sympathy for the causes that drove them north

    • 57% believe that immigrants are coming here because the government will be granting amnesty

The country is split, however, on the details of exactly how fast the return should be done. Only 10% feel that they should be merely dropped off at the Mexican border. A third of those who feel they should be returned insist that should be “only if” conditions are safe.

As would be expected, the issue has had a negative effect on the President, as well. Only one-third of those polled approve of his handling of the issue.

A clear conclusion from this poll is that amnesty or open immigration policies are a minority preference.

Although there is an extremely complicated problem now that the illegal immigrants are here, policies and positions of the Obama administration have clearly sent a signal to people south of the border that have inspired these activities. And a majority of Americans want it stopped.

AP-GfK Poll: Majority of Americans Say Send Unaccompanied Minors Back ASAP

Posted on Tuesday, July 29th, 2014 at 8:08 pm.
    by: Suzanne Reisig Olden

For nearly two months, images of immigrant children who have crossed the border without a parent, only to wind up in concrete holding cells once in United States, have tugged at heartstrings. Yet most Americans now say U.S. law should be changed so they can be sent home quickly, without a deportation hearing.
A new Associated Press-GfK poll finds two-thirds of Americans now say illegal immigration is a serious problem for the country, up 14 points since May and on par with concern about the issue in May 2010, when Arizona’s passage of a strict anti-immigration measure brought the issue to national prominence.
Nearly two-thirds, 62 percent, say immigration is an important issue for them personally, a figure that’s up 10 points since March. President Barack Obama’s approval rating for his handling of immigration dropped in the poll, with just 31 percent approving of his performance on the issue, down from 38 percent in May.
More than 57,000 unaccompanied immigrant children have illegally entered the country since October. Most of the children hail from Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador, where gang violence is pervasive. Many are seeking to reunite with a parent already living in the United States.
Since initially calling the surge an “urgent humanitarian situation” in early June, Obama has pressed Central American leaders to stem the flow and has asked Congress for $3.7 billion in new money to hire more immigration judges, build more detention space and process children faster.
House Republicans on Tuesday put forward a bill costing $659 million through the final two months of the fiscal year that would send National Guard troops to the U.S.-Mexico border and allow authorities to deport children more quickly.
By a 2-to-1 margin, Americans oppose the current process for handling unaccompanied minors crossing the border, which requires that those who are not from Mexico or Canada stay in the U.S. and receive a hearing before a judge before they can be deported. Changing the law to allow all children crossing illegally to be sent back without such a hearing drew support from 51 percent of those polled.

Americans Want Illegals Deported, Give Obama Negative Approval On Issue

July 29, 2014 by Sam Rolley

    THINKSTOCK

President Barack Obama could find himself in trouble if he attempts to make unilateral changes to the Nation’s immigration policy, as new polling data shows that a hefty majority of Americans disagree with the Administration on the issue.
According to the numbers out in an Economist/YouGov.com survey, 81 percent of Americans believe that the unaccompanied children flowing across the southern border are a matter of serious concern to the Nation.
Fifty-seven percent of those polled said that they believe the current immigration crisis has resulted from U.S. policies that perpetuate the belief that the Nation’s government “is or will be granting amnesty to undocumented illegal immigrant children.” Just 29 percent attributed the immigration surge to increased South and Central American violence.
Only 11 percent support allowing the illegal immigrants to remain in the country, and fewer (10 percent) believe that the U.S. should drop them off in Mexico. Thirty-five percent said that government should work to return the young immigrants to their home countries if conditions are safe, compared to 32 percent who said the immigrants must be returned regardless of conditions.
“Those who would let the children stay in the United States until it is certain they have a safe place to return to are more likely to be younger, to be Democrats, and to be Hispanic,” YouGov reported. “Women are evenly divided about what should be done, while men, by a ten point margin, favor deportation.”
The serious immigration problem is also taking a toll on Obama’s approval rating.
Those who want the children to stay until they can be returned safely approve of the president’s performance,” said the poll analysis.
