    Worse than "Must Speak Spanish."

I was reading the classifieds. In the Misc Help Wanted section, there are ads for companions. Not escorts, but people to assist elderly and disabled people in their homes.

Almost all the ads specified "Must speak English."

I thought it was suppose to be Parents teach your kids, now it is Teachers teach the kids, kids teach the parents
Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.

Sadly, we can no longer assume that everyone living in America speaks English. Truly sad.

Well, don't know about you, but I don't want anyone caring for me that I can't understand or talk to and unfortunatly caring for children, elderly and disabled get stuck with many new immigrants or illegals when it comes to that form of care. In this particular area it used to be Polish who were known to be excellent caregivers. They got the good reputation but maybe I'm wierd, I want to be spoken to in English. It's enough to be that dependant and vunerable, without complicating it with not being able to communicate.......especially in your own home. Some of these are agencies and just try and have a variety of people available to meet various needs. When you look at where a vast majority of people in that age bracket who do this work......many are new immigrants or illegals.

Immigrants who refuse to learn English are weird, not Americans and immigrants who accept English as THE language of OUR country!

I have this funny image, it is of my mother (she is 67 right now and still works almost full-time), having a woman attempting (notice, I say ATTEMPTING) to care for her when she is old and feeble (according to her old and feeble means dead, but...) and unable to speak English either at all, or legibly. I am afraid a situation like that would wind up with her making the caregiver cry and quit her job (this is a woman who has worked full time while caring for six plus kids and keeping it all under control, and also having take down large teenage boys who felt getting mouthy was ok) !!

It is a shame we have to be that specific anymore, it should be a given to speak English, in an American job setting......

This is a situation none of us can avoid, unfortunately...and most of us are NOT prepared for the curve balls...things we just take for granted...like speaking ENGISH!

When my father became ill a few years ago, I had to have help taking care of him because I NEVER would allow him to go into a nursing home. I used the services of several nursing registries and almost ALL of the RN personnel was either Indian or Philipino. But they ALL spoke perfect English. The non-English speaking Hispanics were mostly CNA's (Certified Nurses Aides) and were paid a lesser (but not cheap) salary. There are many African-Americans in the field, but I was not happy with their services....had some pretty bad experiences. But I NEVER was able to get a Caucasian nurse! I was shocked!

The situation has probably gotten much worse over the past few years...and when the baby boomers have to avail themselves of nursing services...they are going to be in for a shock!!! I can't imagine ANYTHING worse than being ill and being surrounded by professionals who don't speak English! Scary!!!

Speaking of this subject and our medical field. Recently there was a series of articles on this doctor, who worked for Kaiser and was, well can we say, not so good? He had made series of mistkaes when apparently under scrutiny he took a job in Australia, and there he began the same mistake laden processin his career. The paper here did an investigation and ofund out that Kaiser was basically covering up for him, and then when they came under scrutiny, they backpeddled and jumped through a few government hoops to satisfy them that this man would not be rehired in the U.S.

To my knowledge, this man was trained in India for his medical career, at least to some degree. They never said if it was felt that his initial training was to blame for his inadequacies.

Imagine, hospitals full of doctors who had either limited English, or who have been trained in third world, or developing countries, treating us and our families.......scary!

It doesn't matter wher they're trained. They have to be retrained in the US inorder to practice in the US.
