Their deaths bring to 19 the number of police officers executed this year in the state of Sinaloa. The patrol unit's radio gear had been removed and its satellite location chip was destroyed. One other officer is also still missing from a separate incident.

In Durango, two other police officers were killed during an armed robbery assault. The overall tally of homicides in Mexico reached 21 between Sunday night and Monday.

Frontera (Tijuana, Baja Calif.), Milenio, Excelsior ( both Mexico City) 5/27/08

In the Culiacan, Sinaloa, area two younger men were taken away by force and killed very late yesterday evening (Mon.) by some men carrying assault weapons. But then the kidnappers ran into a police patrol and a vehicle chase and exchange of gunfire took place. The thugs barricaded themselves in a "safe house" and used fragmentation grenades, AK47's and HK G-3 rifles. Army personnel then arrived and a six block area was cordoned off and many residents were evacuated because of the heavy exchange of gunfire and explosions from the grenades. (There are contradictory and unofficial reports in these papers as to the number of dead: two of them say there were 5 officers and 3 thugs killed, while others say 8 "Federal Preventive Police" and one thug died.) After the battle, ten AK47 and six HK-G3 rifles, grenades, ammunition and tactical gear were seized.
