Update: Absolut tries again. I think they are starting to get it:
We apologize
Posted Sunday, April 06, 2008, 7:38:29 PM
During the weekend we have received several comments on the ad published in Mexico. We acknowledge the reactions and debate and want to apologize for the concerns this ad caused. We are truly sorry and understand that the ad has offended several persons. This was not our intention. The ad has been withdrawn as of Friday April 4th and will not be used in the future.
In no way was the ad meant to offend or disparage, or advocate an altering of borders, lend support to any anti-American sentiment, or to reflect immigration issues.
To ensure that we avoid future similar mistakes, we are adjusting our internal advertising approval process for ads that are developed in local markets.
This is a genuine and sincere apology,

Yes, it ended April 1st and the apology comes too late. Whoever approved this ad in Mexico should have known this would happen, but apparently didn't care?
Any word on Absolut stock yet? |

Did you notice the LA Times when it says
"The latest advertising campaign in Mexico from Swedish vodka maker Absolut promises to push all the right buttons south of the U.S. border, but it could ruffle a few feathers in El Norte.
I don't know about you but this tells me that the entire Country of Mexico thinks this way. And we should be viewing this as a “Documented” statement of “perceived facts” of the people and the government of that cesspool county. _________________

So the company's PR department has lied about the ad's withdrawl date?
We need to ask the presidential candidates--will you drink Absolut beverages and ban them from the White House if elected president?

Here is their response to my letter. I returned another scathing letter telling them the issue will not be forgotten and they have lost big $ because of this.
They just spewed more filth....read below.
Dear *****,
We understand your concerns and we are sorry that you feel the way you feel. This was not our intention, as we try to explain in our statement. Though you may not agree, I hope you understand.
The In An Absolut World advertising campaign invites consumers to visualize a world that appeals to them -- one they feel may be more idealized or one that may be a bit "fantastic." As such, the campaign will elicit varying opinions and points of view. We have a variety of executions running in countries worldwide, and each is germane to that country and that population.
This particular ad, which ran in Mexico , was based upon historical perspectives and was created with a Mexican sensibility. In no way was this meant to offend or disparage, nor does it advocate an altering of borders, nor does it lend support to any anti-American sentiment, nor does it reflect immigration issues. Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.
As a global company, we recognize that people in different parts of the world may lend different perspectives or interpret our ads in a different way than was intended in that market. Obviously, this ad was run in Mexico , and not the US -- that ad might have been very different.
Best regards,
Erika Gelinder

Is there any way for us to actually CONFIRM that the ad has been pulled? We have been given two separate dates. I think they are just trying to mollify the little kid crying on the playground. I know the emails we were personally sent back, and phone calls, and emails being deleted unread show pure and total contempt for us. _________________ Proud American and wife of a wonderful LEGAL immigrant from Ireland.

I wonder if maybe the sale of absolut might be falling through? That might be the reason they turned from being pampas donkeys to this so quickly. _________________ Proud American and wife of a wonderful LEGAL immigrant from Ireland.

I hope the sale is cancelled and every American who has stock in Absolut sells it tomorrow.

Yeah, Cayla , they must have lied. I thought I read in one of their responses that this was an old ad that had already been taken down.
I like that one response above that this did not insult individuals - this insulted a nation.
I just get madder about this ad and their responses by the day. |
