Services sought for growing Latino population

By JAMES MCGINNIS
Bucks County Courier Times

The Latino Leadership Alliance of Bucks County met Friday with educators and social workers from Bensalem to discuss needed programs for that community's growing Latino population.

The nonprofit alliance runs after-school and summer camp programs for Latinos and seminars for recent immigrants seeking citizenship in Warminster and Bristol, both home to the largest percentage of Latinos in the county.

But Bensalem is catching up fast with those towns and the need for local services is growing, said Gladys Mendieta, who co-founded the alliance 15 years ago.

Four percent of Bensalem was Latino as of the 2000 U.S. Census. Nearly half of the 2,505 registered Latinos were Mexicans. The community was home to 739 Puerto Ricans, 99 Guatemalans and 87 Ecuadorians, Census figures show. (Those numbers do not include undocumented immigrants.)

Bensalem schools Superintendent James Lombardo attended the meeting, hoping the alliance could help to improve communications with the growing number of school parents who don't speak English.

The number of kids who primarily spoke Spanish, Russian or Indian has more than tripled — from about 80 eight years ago to 400 this school year — Lombardo estimated. In response, the district will begin a world language program next year with all students in the third grade learning Spanish.

The kids are learning. But some worry that parents aren't able to understand school report cards and district mailings. Lombardo wanted the alliance's help in reaching parents who wouldn't come out to school events, possibly due to the language or cultural barrier.

The new director of the Bensalem public library, Lisa Kern, also expressed frustration in being unable to reach out to the Latino community. Kern discussed plans to expand the libraries and foreign language books and event host an “international film festival” at the library.

“We would like to get more Latinos to come to the library,” Kern said. “We have bilingual materials. But they don't come out.”

Local businesswoman Myriam Santiago said outreach efforts, particularly those for recent immigrants, would continue to struggle unless they came to places where Latinos felt “safe.”

“You have to begin your outreach in the church. The church is the only place where many of these people feel safe,” Santiago said. “Otherwise, people won't come out. They worry about immigration issues.”

Other outreach programs discussed during the meeting included volleyball and soccer tournaments for the men and weekend and evening hours for social services programs.

“Many of the Latino men we'd like to be able to help are working six days a week. They're working two jobs. But the programs that are available are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” said Teresa Conejo, a local nurse and Latino Alliance board member.

Board members said the Latino Alliance would schedule additional meetings within the community before launching new programs. For more information about the group, visit their Web site at www.llabc.org or call 215-788-4452.

Excuse me, in the third grade learning Spanish? Have we lost our minds? And what about the russian and indian kids, they will also have to learn Spanish? What on earth does this really mean, a takeover, to force the Spanish language on EVERYBODY, don't we already have a language supposed to unite all of us, English?

Since they don't want to assimilate here, they should just go home.

It just doesn't get any worse than this!!! No wonder American schools are worse than most underdeveloped countries! We ARE are third world country! I say we go back to segregation...separate the non-English speaking foreigners from the American schools...and let them fund and support their own schools! I don't want one $$$ of my taxpayer money going to support this idiocy! I am so thankful my children are adults now!

For the Latino population--discrimination.

Past immigrants did it on their own and learned:
English
Civics
American history

Being bilingual is an asset.

"world language program"--world????

However, if they can teach all 3rd graders Spanish, they can certainly teach them English first.

Are they teaching Russian and Indian?

Now that sounds like a great idea! Since Hipanics think they are TOO SPECIAL TO ASSIMILATE, let them build their own Spanish schools. They can pay for them from all OUR taxpayer funds the government keeps forking over to racist Hispanic groups like LaRaza. I am sure that American big business sponsors like Coke, Ford, and Pepsi will contribute to their fund as well. Unless that money is just used to pay Janet Murguia's salary and the other top brass there. I wonder if the IRS audits LaRaza.

There is no reason that a legal immigrant would feel unsafe the demand on the part of this group of Latinos is that the American citizens support illegal aliens with our tax money. Who says an American citizen should have any rights. If you tried to enter Mexico without papers and tried to work there without papers you would be arrested and deported. If you tried to make a political demand as anything other than a citizen in Mexico you would be arrested and deported.

We already pay there $4,000-7,000 school attendance each year per child through our taxes. And they have the gall to want more?!?!

That's what I see. They like to drag others in with the same issue, but only with the solution to make everyone speak Spanish. 63 languages spoken in this area, but attention just to the hispanics. The answer is to take all immigrants and teach them Spanish as their 2nd language while the Spanish speakers learn nothing....and citizens who never left this country being forced to learn Spanish to get a job.

All these articles start out diverse and end up with just a hispanic Latino base.

One more thing...

"LATINO LEADERSHIP WANTS...local schools to provide funds...."

This is what makes me madder than a wet hen!!! Who gives a rat's behind about LATINO LEADERSHIP!!! American leadership is, or should be, the only thing that counts in AMERICA! We don't have Japanese, Vietmanese, Italian, French, British, Canadian, German, Swiss, Bangladesh, Farsi, Ethiopean LEADERSHIP in America!!!!

Go back to Mexico or Central America if you want to be LATINO LEADERS! God know they NEED leadership!!! Just get the (bleep) out of my country...all of you...LaRaza, LULAC, MALDEF, MeCHa, and all 48 Mexican Consulates!

How about some AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN Mexico!

Guess what? Every race of people in this country are working 2 and sometimes 3 jobs where they don't have access to services and businesses that are open just during certain hours. This isn't a HISPANIC issue! This is an issue that effects everyone. Damn I'm sick of this latino crap.....like all the hardships of the world and all difficulties are ONLY on the backs of the poor abused latinos. Just them and no-one else. Please. We've been having this problem for decades for every person of every race and every sex for a long time. Can the Latino crap.....doesn't wash.

Same here. I don't care what it is......the Latinos are somehow more different and more special than any other group going through the same exact thing. Latino poverty is different than poverty for all the others. Abused Latino women are different than other abused women. Latino jobs are different than the rest. Latino education is different and special too. Latino childbirth is different than any other womans childbirth. We can't build a soccer field....it has to be a Latino soccer field...We can't have food banks for everyone without them needing a hispanic food bank special and only for them. People can't even request an English speaker of any color without being called racist....yet they DEMAND Spanish speakers that are hispanic and that's fine.

Seriously....I have had it. Never in one time in my life have I ever demanded, expected or even uttered the word "white" for ANYTHING. I can't learn unless a "white" person teaches me. I can't shop in a business unless it's a "white" business. I can't get pregnant and give birth in a hospital unless it's a "white only" event.....we're special and different don't ya know? Reminds me of an old movie where people were afraid getting black blood would make them black. These people are more racist and stupid than we were. We atleast didn't know different.....they do and are still promoting this..

I want to know why the Latino community, whether or not they are illegal, seem to think they should get special treatment. Everyone is created equal. So, no special treatment of any kind. Why do they have special needs. IF you are hear legally you should know English so why do you get special education etc. This country is being divided by multiculturism. United we stand, divided we fall. This SPECIAL group get this, this SPECIAL group gets that. What about the SPECIAL group called AMERICANS.l

It's all about the money. Anyone can set-up an advocacy agency, attach the word Latino to it, and then apply for and get your ongoing govt. grants, while also soliciting donations from private and public sector. What's a business to do when approached?? Cough-up a donation or be considered racist. There are literally thousands upon thousands of these groups, some just one or two people.

Back in the 50's, Lulac lobbied to remain counted as white in the census. When civil rights came along, with all the benefits of being a minority, they lobbied to be counted as a minority. They are a former majority group member, now a minority group member.
