Immigrants protest crackdown on counterfeit DVD and CD sales

Immigrants protest crackdown on counterfeit DVD and CD sales

The new law in Spain has sent some of the people selling the counterfeit items to prison

The people, generally immigrants who engage in the activity known here as ‘Top Manta’, selling CD’s and DVD’s on sheets in the street, have been demonstrating in Madrid against law changes which can send them to prison.

About 1,000 people attended the protest which was supported by some top Spanish actors such as Alberto San Juan and Javier Corcuera. They marched from the Lavapies area of the city to La Puerta del Sol and at the rally at the end of the protest a statement was read out in five languages – Spanish, English, French, Arabic and Wolof which is the language spoken in a large part of Senegal.

Their argument was that the right of a musician or artist to earn a living cannot go against the right of a person to survive.
One Senegalese man who has no Spanish papers and who attended the demonstration said that he and his colleagues were now scared at what was happening.

I used to manage a drug store in a hispanic neighborhood. A Sam's 99 cent store opened up across the street and they began to hurt business. Once I found out that they sold pirated DVD's, I turned them in. They lasted about 6 months after that.
We see so many tribes overrun and undermined

While their invaders dream of lands they've left behind
