Texas Health Agency Bars Workers From Going To Mexico

McALLEN (March 12, 2009)--The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is barring workers in five state agencies from traveling to Mexico to conduct research or work on bi-national health programs because of fears of kidnappings and other drug cartel-fueled violence.

The commission informed employees of the state's health and human services system in late February after the State Department issued a travel alert that advised federal employees not to travel to Mexico without a supervisor's approval.

On Feb. 18, a gunfight between suspected members of a drug cartel and police killed at least six people in Reynosa, Mexico, across the border from McAllen.
