Immigration law worries: AG Eric Holder to meet concerned police chiefs

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will meet with about a dozen police chiefs today, including the top cops from Phoenix, Los Angeles and Houston, to discuss Arizona's strict new immigration law.

The police chiefs are expected to tell the attorney general the new law threatens to "drive a wedge" between their communities and law enforcement, according to a statement by the group obtained by CNN.

Police chiefs from Philadelphia, Minneapolis, Salt Like City and San Jose, Calif. will also attend today's meeting with Holder.

Meanwhile, a team of Justice Department staff attorneys has recommended the U.S. government challenge the immigration law in federal court, sources tell Fox News.

The department's Civil Division also drafted a complaint, calling the law unconstitutional. However, the sources said there is no guarantee the Attorney General's office will definitely file a lawsuit.

Arizona's new law gives police permission to question anyone's residency status if there is a reasonable suspicion they may be an illegal immigrant. A sharp backlash from civil rights groups claims the police's new powers will lead to racial profiling, while proponents call it a powerful tool to fight illegal immigration in the state.
