LOS ANGELES—A U.S. Justice Department audit has questioned more than $2 million claimed by Los Angeles County under a federal program to fight crime on the southwest border.

The audit published Friday by the Department's Office of the Inspector General says the county received more than $22 million in reimbursement over a seven-year period under the so-called Southwest Border Prosecution Initiative to prosecute crimes stemming from federal probes.

The audit says Los Angeles County claimed funds for 532 cases that were not eligible for coverage.

Assistant District Attorney for Administration Sharon Matsumoto says the county believes the claims are valid.

The reimbursements are available in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas.
