U.S. Navy in South China Sea

China has begun to stage its biggest strategic challenge to the United States since the creation of the Communist state in 1949, attempting to push the U.S. out of East Asia, particularly attacking the presence of the U.S. in the SouthChina Sea, according to a report from Joseph Farah's G2 Bulletin.

In response to the challenge that directly confronts U.S. political and strategic standing in the region, the U.S. diplomatically has stiffened its position.

The challenge has come in the form of provocative buzzing of U.S. naval ships and aircraft on surveillance duties in international waters.

While it is unclear why China may have chosen to begin this challenge, it has been asserting claims for some time to the South China Sea based on what it believes are historical claims to territories taken from it over the centuries.

China's record of behavior in 2010 have been "downright aggressive," according to Dr. Subhash Kapila, a senior analyst with the South Asia Analysis Group.

"Suddenly, so it seems, China in the spring of 2010 commenced terming the South China Sea as a 'core national interest' articulated as such by Chinese interlocutors with senior U.S. administration officials," Kapila said. "China had started ratcheting up tensions on this issue from 2008 onwards."

Part of the problem is that Chinese maps show the entire South China Sea from Taiwan to Indonesia as being under Chinese sovereignty.

"In other words, the South China Sea in China's policy formulations is virtually an inland sea of China," Kapila said.
