Report on immigration focuses on Kan. sec of state

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - A new Southern Poverty Law Center report criticizing attempts by states and cities to crack down on illegal immigration focuses on Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach.

The report released Monday is titled in part, "When Mr. Kobach Comes to Town."

Kobach took office as Kansas secretary of state two weeks ago. He's a Republican Kansas City-area law professor who's advised cities and states on how to attack illegal immigration. He helped draft a controversial immigration law Arizona enacted last year.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, based in Montgomery, Ala., argues in its report that such policies spark expensive court fights and are damaging to communities.

Kobach didn't immediately return a telephone message seeking comment, but he's previously dismissed the center's criticisms as unfounded.
