Chicano Youth Conference held at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Hundreds of students from all over California got a taste of college life during the Annual Chicano Youth Conference at Fresno State.

Students filled into the University Satellite Union to hear about all sorts of topics ranging from politics to the arts.

Organizers also put a big emphasis on education and the importance of getting a college degree.

During smaller workshops, students learned about admissions requirements and financial aid opportunities.

The theme of this year's event was "Self Empowered Youth: Knowledge, Unity and Action."

"You gotta get knowledge in order to do more in life. You have to go to school, educate yourself, and go out there into the community to help others," Xavier Vazquez said.

Chicano Youth also learned about AB 540, legislation that allows undocumented students to pay in-state tuition rates.

Organizers say they want students to know they can go to college, regardless of their immigration status.

Hmmmm, our president uses "gotta" and "gonna" quite frequently.

These folks are so quick to call for "Chicano" benefits, until they get arrested for being here illegally. Then they become poor pitiful students only trying to get an education in the only country they've ever known. They claim to be as American as any of us citizens.
