New Mexican Law Stopping Thrifty Gas Shoppers At Border

New Mexican Law Stopping Thrifty Gas Shoppers At Border

    POSTED: 9:48 pm CDT August 7, 2008
    UPDATED: 7:41 am CDT August 8, 2008

CIUDAD ACUNA, Coahuila, Mexico -- People going across the border to save some bucks on gas may find out the hard way about a new Mexican law.

The new law restricts the amount of gas Americans can buy across the border, and one couple said Mexican authorities seized their vehicle and won't return it for at least four days.

"If it's a law, why isn't there a sign for American people to say, 'We're limited on diesel'?" said Andy McCulley in a telephone interview from Mexico. "Had we known that, we would have never, never done this."

McCulley said she and her husband have been going across the border into Ciudad Acuna to purchase cheap gas for decades and never had a problem until Thursday afternoon. As they entered the customs area, McCulley said, Mexican authorities asked if they'd purchased any diesel. After responding yes, McCulley said their 2006 GMC pickup was impounded.

The price of Mexican diesel fuel is about half the cost of diesel in the United States. Mexican authorities said the new law is designed to prevent bootleggers from making a profit.

Bobby McCulley admitted to authorities they'd put 10 gallons in the truck's tank and an additional 50 gallons into an auxiliary tank -- that's where the law came up.

Mexican authorities told the McCulleys they would need a permit to purchase that amount of fuel, sign some papers and leave the truck in Mexico, McCulley said. They refused.

"They won't let us get near the vehicle, they've taken the keys away (and) they finally gave my husband back his driver's license, but they won't give us back the keys," McCulley said.

The McCulleys said they've encountered other Americans who've also had their vehicles seized, but the McCulleys said they were told they couldn't have their truck back for the time being.

"This is uncalled for," Andy McCulley said. "It really and truly is uncalled for, and I will stay here. I will get some deodorant, but I will stay here."

Val Verde County Sheriff D'Wayne Jernigan and Del Rio Mayor Efrain Valdez confirmed Mexican customs officials were stopping trucks with auxiliary tanks not installed by the manufacturer. The sezied vehicles are being held for about two weeks, according to county sources.

Ciudad Acuna officials said they concerned about the possible impact to local tourism if the law continues as stated, and have been working with U.S., Val Verde county and Del Rio officials to resolve the McCulleys' and others plights at the border.

The McCulleys were eventually allowed to return to the United States late Thursday with their vehicle, auxiliary tank and diesel.

They should be happy to be getting American dollars! Better than shipping Mexican residents over the border illegally to contribute to the GNP by sending remittances home. Here is a horrifying thought--maybe, Mexico's aging refineries are just not producing enough these days.

Law? Since when did those matter? According to Mexico their people don't have to abide by any here, so why should we bother there? You know.......being the great neighbors we are and all.

An old axiom of real estate that is even more true today is fences make good neighbors. To wit, consider the 14-mile double-layer fence between San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico. Its benefits in stopping illegal entry into the U.S. were immediate and long lasting. According to a 2005 Congressional Research Service report illegal alien apprehensions along the fence region dropped from 202,000 in 1992 to 9,000 in 2004, a reduction greater than 95%. Additionally, there was a 53% drop in San Diego’s crime rate, as reported by Congressman Duncan Hunter. The open borders lobby ignores these facts when they say fences will not work.
But, particularly galling is that December’s omnibus spending bill did not include the appropriations for construction of the double layer 700-mile border fence, which was passed into law just a few months earlier. Additionally, the requirement of a double-layer fence mandated by the Secure Fence Act of 2006 was removed, so if funding is ever restored, a truly effective fence being constructed is unlikely. Now, for all you doubters about a fence between Mexico and the U.S. working effectively in seriously quelling illegal immigration, consider this: there is a fence around the White House and the Green Zone in Baghdad. Why? To keep people out and provide security. Does it work? Absolutely, since they are still there there. If fences didn't work, they would never have been built in the first place. So, Mr. Bush, WHERE’S THE FENCE, the entire Congressionally mandated fence, on our border???

This is another ploy by the racist hate-mongering mexican government to "hurt" law-abiding Americans.

Shut down the border! Let no more mexican ambulances in with mexican citizens. Why the HELL are we giving them FREE medical treatment? We sure as hell ain't getting any FREE gas! Demand cash up front if any mexican citizens need treatment, that's the mexican way, ole!

Subject: Fw: Protest at the RNC: Get your bus tickets now!
    To: haywood haywood@igc.org

    Friends –

September 1st, the Republican Convention opens in St. Paul. If you want to join in the protests, bus seats are available from Chicago. Act now: we have to pay for the busses by Monday, August 18th. Most bus companies have already said they have no busses left, and if we have to reserve busses in the last 10 days before the convention, we might see prices go up.

    Options:

There are several schedules and prices, including charter busses as well as some Mega Bus seats that we are holding.

    Tickets are available for:

    Charter Busses:
    - $55 – returning Tuesday a.m., September the 2nd
    - $65 - returning Wednesday a.m., September the 3rd

    Transportation Details:
Monday 9/1: 2:30 a.m. - load busses on Columbus Drive behind the Art Institute. Depart at 3:00 a.m. Arrive at St. Paul State Capitol by 11:00 a.m. start of rally. 1:00 pm step off for march to Xcel Center.
    - Schedule 1: Return trip departs St. Paul at 9:00 pm upon conclusion Bush's speech at the convention (scheduled for 7:00 pm). Pick up location TBA. Drop off at Columbus Drive location.
Schedule 2: Return trip departs St. Paul at midnight. Pick up location TBA. Drop off at Columbus Drive location.
Schedule 3: Return trip departs St. Paul at 8:00 pm on Tuesday, 9/2, following the March for Our Lives (4:00 – 8:00 pm). Pick up location TBA. Drop off at Columbus Drive location.

Want to arrive a little early before the start of the rally?
Mega Bus option: A limited number of one way tickets on Mega Bus are available.
    - $22

    Transportation Details:
Sunday, August 31st. Board at Union Station, W. Jackson Blvd. and S. Canal St. Depart: 10:30 pm. Arrive North 3rd Ave by 4th St. Parking in Minneapolis, 6:30 a.m. You will be responsible for your own return reservation. You will be responsible for transportation in the Twin Cities. If you are able to volunteer to help the Coalition to March on the RNC, transportation assistance might be available.

    Donate
If you are unable to travel to St. Paul, you can assist others that want to be part of the historic protest. You can contribute whatever amount you can afford. Recommended donation is $65, to cover the full cost of a bus seat. We are committed to getting everyone to St. Paul that wants to go, but many, especially low income people, aren't able to afford the price of a ticket. Help them get on the bus!

    Pay On Line
The Coalition to March on the RNC and Stop the War have set up Paypal for us on their website: http://marchonrnc.org/ChicagoBus

If you prefer, you can write a check for the amount to the Coalition to March on the RNC. Mail it to POBox 87613, Chicago, IL 60680-0613. Write in the memo: Schedule 1, 2, or 3; Megabus; or donation.

    In struggle -
