Sheriff's Illegal Alien Stand Could Put Him On 'Daily Show'
Jones One Of Three Considered For Immigration Show
POSTED: 5:53 pm EDT August 14, 2006
UPDATED: 6:06 pm EDT August 14, 2006
HAMILTON -- Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones might find himself in the national spotlight -- with Jon Stewart.
“The Daily Show” wants to do a story on immigration, so they called Jones -- who has been very out spoken on the issue.
As most people know, the show often takes an issue, and puts its own humor and spin on it, often times even mocking it.
Jones said that as long as he can talk about his view on illegal immigration in front of a national audience, he's in.
"This isn't for sissies. You got to be able to take it. President Bush has been on there, Kerry was on there and the people that are too serious about themselves,” Jones said. "Life’s too short and if it brings attention to it, even though it's in a comedy way, it still brings attention to it."
Jones said it's not a done deal yet. He said the show is choosing between him and two other law enforcement officers.

'Daily Show' talking with Butler sheriff about TV appearance
By Chris Dumond
Staff Writer
Butler County Sheriff Richard K. Jones’ outspoken views on immigration could land him a spot on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart.”
Jones said show producers contacted him Friday and Monday about possibly appearing on the show, though nothing has been scheduled.
“The Daily Show,” which appears on Comedy Central, features interviews with real newsmakers intertwined with tongue-in-cheek segments poking fun at current events.
“Basically, they make humor out of serious situations,” Jones said. “I’m willing to do the show if it will bring light, even in a humorous way ... to the cause of getting something done about illegal immigration.”
From billing the federal government for the cost of housing illegal immigrants in the county jail to erecting billboards threatening those who would employ them, Jones’ get-tough stance on immigration reform has rated coverage in the Washington Post and the New York Times. He’s almost always photographed standing with arms folded outside the jail beside one of his “illegal immigrants here” signs.
Jones said he was also contacted recently by producers for “60 Minutes” for a segment about federal law enforcement agencies’ response to illegal immigration. The JournalNews was unable to reach producers from “60 Minutes” or “The Daily Show” for comment.
“When a local sheriff in Ohio is getting this much attention on an issue for the whole United States, it’s a good feeling that people are hearing what you’re saying,” Jones said.
Despite a being self-described “fake news show” presented by comedians, studies have found “The Daily Show” has a notable impact on viewers.
The National Annenberg Election Survey in 2004 found that “Daily Show” viewers were more informed about presidential campaign issues than those who watched national news shows or regularly read newspapers.
