Suspect Arrested in Two Hit-and-Run Deaths

A Winnetka man suspected in the hit-and-run deaths of a teenage couple on the shoulder of a San Bernardino County highway was behind bars Saturday.

Police say a minivan driven by Enrique Hernandez, 23, veered off California 62 near Desert Hot Springs early Thursday and struck 16-year-old Tracey Nelson and girlfriend Samantha Nadine Schattler, also 16.

Nelson died at the scene.

A passing motorist later found Schattler dead on top of the abandoned van.

Hernandez was arrested Thursday in a coin laundry in Canoga Park.

He is being held at the Central Detention Center in San Bernardino on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter.

Police say he confessed to driving the van.

I hope they fry this SOB! One of the more gruesome traffic stories I've heard in some time. He drove 6 miles with Samantha Nadine Schattler on the roof tangled up in the luggage rack all except one of her legs which was in the van because it had been severed by the windshield when he hit her.
