Who was the 1st New Years Baby in your City?

In Columbus Ohio the first baby born on Jan. 1, 2007 was an anchor baby born to non-English speaking parents that came here from Mexico just 6 weeks ago the parents told the reporter through an interpreter.

This was in the newspaper as a 'human interest' story.....it should have been a cautionary tale of what the future holds.

If you don't know, look it up and post it here, lets see just how many American citizens versus non-citizens hold the honor of being 1st born in 2007 in the various Cities and towns we represent. I think it will be scarry, it could even be an eye-opener to use in our emails, faxes and letters.

Montgomery County's first-born baby was supposed to be a girl.

Daniel Arroyo was not only born two days early - New Year's Day - but his mother, Maria De Jesus Flores Vargas, thought for months she was carrying a girl. He is the third consecutive boy to be Montgomery County's first-born of the year.

Daniel wore a blue jumper, a gift from interpreter Stacy Sommer, during an interview Tuesday. With pink colored accessories and clothing already bought, Vargas wasn't ready for the surprise she got after a cesarean delivery. Dr. Elizabeth Colonna was to deliver Daniel, but Dr. Mel Trivedi stepped in.

Her husband, Heriberto Arroyo, and son, Edgar, 7 heard the baby's first cry. Edgar knew right away he didn't have a sister.

"Dad, that sounds like a boy's cry, not a girl's," he said.

Daniel weighed 7 pounds 8 ounces and was 19 3/4 inches long. Vargas said she was in labor only about five hours before his 8:40 a.m. birth.

The couple is originally from San Jose Casa Caidas, Jalisco, Mexico. She is a homemaker and he works for a sub-contractor at Nucor Steel. They moved to Crawfordsville two years ago with sons Edgar and Manuel, 9, who attend Nicholson School.

"We're going to complete a soccer team without a girl," Arroyo said through Sommer.

"They are happier to have a brother," Vargas added. They'll have to be because Vargas doesn't plan on more children.

Being the first born in the county comes with prizes. St. Clare sent the couple a gift basket full of diapers, toys and other gifts. And the Journal Review and advertisers have several gifts in store.

Unaware of the stir he caused, Daniel snuggled into in his father's arms in the hospital Tuesday, while his mother relaxed.

Asked what Daniel might do for a living, Arroyo smiled broadly and said, "El Presidente," or the pope, "Papa de Roma."

Salt Lake City....Doesn't say if they're legal or not. The names indicate that they are definately Latino.

The New Year means new beginnings, new resolves and a race for new life. Many expectant parents - due right around the beginning of January - push hard to have the year's first child. Utah's 2007 leading baby was born at Heber Valley Medical Center. Alan Paolo Zuleta Espinosa made his grand entrance at 12:02 a.m.

Baby Alan's father, Hector Danilo Zuleta Garcia says, "It feels marvelous to hold him in my arms."

For the family, Alan is 6 pounds and 5 ounces of joy. His mother, Maria Espinoza expresses, "I am very happy and didn't expect it. I want to give thanks to God for giving me such a great gift."

It is a gift that came 12 days early. That is why the proud parents are more than a little surprised that Alan is Utah's first baby. "We don't really have words to express how we feel or how content and happy we are with our family and support extended family has given us," says Garcia.

When Maria went into labor Sunday morning, big sister Dairyn could hardly contain her excitement. "She was very happy and she wanted to bring him home last night. Not going to happen," Espinoza laughs.

This was also the first, first baby for Heber Valley Medical Center. To add to the excitement Monday morning, another baby was born at 12:27 a.m.
